MELT-PROOF AND SCRATCH-RESISTANT

I Am Conflicted .....

Posted over 2 years ago
What in hell, do you expect. Max Roach passed away recently, Lord knows I feel bad ..... but.... I have no personal connection to the man. Jazz has been one of my fave genre choices ever since my days as a DJ. Don't get me wrong ... I am not an expert in jazz, not even close. I seem to know a lot about a specific period in Jazz ( BEBOP ) and the rest of my knowledge is fairly general, well better than general but not by much. Anyway before I get to deep I want you to know I like Jazz, .... but.Did Roach call me? No.Did I ever play with Roach? No.Did Roach change my life? No.He died at 83. I haven't even listened to much he recorded after 1969. He will be missed. More for his legacy than by his presence. He is gone, except it. I said he didn't change my life, yet he did alter its course (in a broader sense). We can mourn the loss. I would rather revel in his memory. Max, go knowing you will live forever and your influence will be everlasting.

This track comes from the album *Jazz in 3/4 Time*. The line up is as follows;George Morrow (bass)Billy Wallace (piano)Kenny Dorham (trumpet) who smokes BTW!And none other than Sonny Rollins on tenor. This is a capital H, Hot quintet.

  1. carmensandiego says Thanks for sharing. It's always wonderful to introduce people to and to discover "new" music. (Sad to say but I had never heard of the man prior to his passing.) Hopefully, with things like MOG now, this kind of stuff won't be forgotten. We'll all make sure it gets out there.

  3. ivylander says Molto tasty, Chris. What concerns me about the news of Roach's passing is that there's one less person out there to keep jazz growing. To hear the vitality and alertness of "Blues Waltz" is also to worry that there are so few contemporary players who can match it.

  4. annieander says Very well put. When I heard about Max's passing, I thought something needs to be said. Not by me, I know less about Jazz then I do about classical. And I don't know much about that. I have always felt that Jazz is a musicians music. You need some training to appreciate the sublties...and the free-er the form, the more it loses me. But Max is important. His drumming style, and his contributions to the world of Jazz will be missed...missed by people more in the know than I.

  6. chucky says I know nothing about jazz, but I think it's right to feel a twinge when someone dies that has touched us.
