WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

For indiepixie : What is breakcore ?

Posted about 1 year ago
Breakcore is a term employed in electronic music circles to regroupe artists who use various styles of other genres of electronic music in their songs. In a few minutes, a breakcore artists can go from a speedcore rythm to jungle and mix it all up with samples lifted from pop songs or classical music. Therefore, with so many styles and influences within the same "genre", breakcore can't be defined as a real genre with it's set of codes. The only common denominator between Bong-Ra, Venetian Snares or Drum Corps are their refusal to sit still and manipulate the same beats over and over again. In a way, breakcore is the opposite of down tempo (Dj Shadow, Dj Kurhs) rythm wise. One of the most listenner friendly song in breakcore is "Szamar Madar":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PBeKzVhWHYby Venetian Snares. Otherwise you should check out the myspace pages of "Bong-Ra":http://www.myspace.com/teambongra , "U-ziq":http://www.myspace.com/duntisbourneabbots and, of course, "Venetian Snares":http://www.myspace.com/venetiansnares. But, if you're interested by extreme sounds and new ways to terrorize your neighbours (and your ears), try Xanopticon : "Xanopticon - Neurve":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4om56W1FwE

  3. mollifire says if you're ever in SF, look up 5lowershop. they are one of the longest standing music collectives that specialize in breakcore. many of the artists here have played at 5lowershop parties, plus Aaron Spectre (aka Drum Corps), Eustachian, 666 Gangstaz, Heartworm, HRock, The Tyrant, etc. Also, Teen Suicide Records is a fantastic indie label that releases breakcore. you've hit on my own personal specialty!

  5. mollifire says oh and for the record - Venetian Snares has probably released more breakcore than anyone else. so that is definitely a good place to start. Him and Bong-Ra are pretty much the top names in breakcore. The rest of the people are less known, but GREAT at it. Many are also very dedicated to the breakcore scene in a way that never gets famous or published. Like 666G and Aaron Spectre probably play like 2-3 live shows every month! And when they aren't performing, they are probably hosting one for other musicians to shine...
