MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

Deftones - Just like a wave

Posted about 1 year ago
I'm listenning to the Deftones after a very long pause. I picked up almost by reflex their last record when it came out but I didn't care much for it, didn't rememeber any songs after playing it one time so I put it aside and continued to listen to my daily dose of weirdo / technical music. But recently, I don't remember exactly why, but I rediscovered this band and gave the albums, the self titled, the last one and, this morning, White pony, and realised how much their songs are just as good as they were. It's funny ... after all these years when I listenned to Korn and other nu metal crap I loved Around the fur and always thought of it as the record that represented the most my teenage years. The dynamics, the lyrics, the screams and the overall feel of calm and tension that this record contains defined much of these years. Now looking back, I feel like this is exactly how I want to feel for the rest of my life. Never get stale and always push forward, just like this band always did from record to record. White pony is still an amazing record and it completly baffles me that this guys were associated with Korn, Chevelle or Mudvayne. Just look at their profile on last.fm and check out the list of associated "artist". It's unbelievable ! Deftones were and are miles away from these bands ! Maybe it's because they always cared about making music instead of writing songs ... Let me explain. When I make a difference between song writing and music it's because to me song writing means writing a coherent piece of music that fits on its own on an album. Deftones' music is more about an overall feel, the songs are like a big puzzle, the melt into each other to form something bigger, I little bit like Tool but without the prog. The Deftones care more about little details in their songs just like the sound of the snare near the end of Be quiet and drive (far away), just before the guitar comes back again and plays that riff (you know the one I'm talking about) until everything fades away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0Vu5yFdFoM
