Jam Bands

Posted about 3 years ago

I've been listening to a lot of jam band music lately. Which mostly means the Grateful Dead, since I was practically raised on that band. There's just something about wandering, varied guitar lines that's very soothing.

Speaking of the Dead, I think Jerry Garcia is a highly underrated guiatarist. This may just be my dad speaking again, but I think he had talent that was truly unmatched by any other. He couldn't play the fastest or necessarily the most complicated music, but his ability to seemlessly transition from one style or melody into another never fails to amaze me.

On a good night The Grateful Dead were simply astounding, guiding us through a strange musical universe where the distinctions of genre & place were obliterated, deconstructed, & rearranged. Jerry Garcia's laser beam guitar licks were our flashlight on the journey, grounding us in the familiar as we explored the cosmos.
