Summer love songs royalty

Posted about 3 years ago

Last summer, Colbie Caillat's fresh melody and warm voice could be heard everytime the "on" button of a radio was pressed. "Bubbly" was the perfect summer hit; all lovely and happy, it was just irresisteble. Even now, we can't seem to get enough of it, can we? I know I can't. The rest of her album is just as good, if not better.

As winter came, "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz hit the charts. Cute, summery and carpe diem, it got us through the cold. Like "Bubbly", everyone happily in love felt in perfect sync with it. (Although I got sick of it).

Jason and Colbie are undeniably the king and queen of addictive summer love songs. Then why is their duet such a disappointement?
"Lucky" is unstructured. It feels like it was written in a rush. Like someone came up a very good idea, but blew it, by wanting to get it over with quickly.
The lyrics are poor, despite of the geniously sweet concept of "lucky I'm in love with my best friend"; from then on, all through the chourous, it's too generic.
Those familiar with both their work know they can do better instrumentally. During the first verse it's good, and I like the strings, but again it's like ideas that were full of potential and weren't fully developed.

Overall "Lucky" is a fairily good song that sounds incomplete, wich is so much less than what I expected, coming from whoom it comes from. In my opinion, the bar was raised higher from too artists that usally show such solid quality.
