WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

The "reinvented" Britney Spears

Posted 7 months ago

She wanted to be like Madonna, but wasn't tough enough. It would be okay, if she had anything else to offer.

When Britney Spears released Blackout, my immediate thought was of rebound boyfriends. With all the public scandal going on in her life, it was hard to believe it was something true and inspired. It was obviouslly an "I'm still standing" statement - a rebound album.
Despite that, when I read that she had a song about how the media "feeds" on her life, I was actually a little interested. I figured it was either an "I don't care about it" song, or sort of a "standing up to the bullies" kind of thing. I turned out to be a little bit of both and by all means, a disappointement (not that I had very high expectations, but still). The song has no personality or meaning, it's impossible to see through it. Then, there was Gimme more, which was just laughable. It was clear she wasn't fully recovered.

When, so shortly after, she released the album Circus, with the innocent picture on the cover, it didn't take a genius to realise that they were selling out her new washed-faced-sober image, while people still hummed the songs from her last album. TIME IS MONEY!
Womanizer is danceble and catchy, so it was the perfect first single. I'm not going to get started on the poor quality of the song or the even lower of her voice, because with commercial pop there's really no point.
As for Circus, it's a remake of Piece of me. The melody is unmistakebly similar, and the lyrics... what can I even say about the lyrics?

She was "miss american dream when I was seventeen" because she was the virgin with the ponpons in her hair, in a time with less musical choices and no singer like her. Currently, there is no space in the music scene for the good girl she can lo longer convince us she is, or the bad girl she is not. There are new blondes (and brunnetes too, don't take me wrong) with no voice or individuallity breaking out everyday. And with every new song, Britney proves that she is exactly what people expect of her - just another puppet.

Yeah but she's a cute puppet.  With all her drama it is amazing that she has even managed to record a good new album and tours.  Her shows still sell out.  I will be there Monday at the Honda Center in Anaheim.
