MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

(48)

So, here's my contribution for funky friday. As I'm nearly collapsing under my current work load, I have to take a musical break from now to then, exploring my favorite online record stores just to keep alive. This week I stumbled thereby over the label "Melting Pot Music" in Cologne. They are quite new (five years), were founded by a guy named DJ Olski - apparently a big one in the HipHop scene from Cologne. He is also member of Soulstrut - a site, I got aware of though the post of burningdervish. Thanks again burningdervish for that site, if you should happen to read this - the mix of DJ Staffro is still rotating heavily in my playlist. They are specialized on HipHop and Funk. I'm citing now their "About" page, not having to repeat all that stuff:

" Melting Pot Music was founded in 2002 by Oliver "Olski" von Felbert, a DJ, music activist and former Groove Attack / Superrappin A&R from Cologne, Germany. The first commercial release was a 45 single by Lefties Soul Connection from Amsterdam. 500 copies pressed and sold-out within three weeks.

Some four years later MPM is the home of artists like DJ Day, A-ko, Devil McDoom, Hawkeye, Le Scratchfunk, Upskiboo and Imperial Breed. The MPM sound is rooted in hip-hop (culture) and the artists come from all the place (Amsterdam, Palm Springs, Kopenhagen, Paris, Hamburg...). MPM is taking the old to the new and we have just begun! " (end of citation)

If found them via Tunes and they seem to be a real burner for this record shop - musically as commercially. My favorite HipHopper from that label is the U.S. American A-ko, which I presented to you yesterday. Today I want to show you my favorite funk artist from that label up to now, who's from Tel Aviv (Israel) and his name is Kutiman

I heard his tracks on Tunes and had to buy them immediately - couldn't wait until I can afford the vinyl. As I'm not the big funk specialist I just tagged the artist as Tunes did: Psychedelic Space Funk. I have no idea, if this is appropriate, I leave it up to you to find a better category or to be happy with that. I just love his style and I must have heard those tracks until now up to 30 times. The singles are available on vinyl only, but they have two compilations out with their label artists and both tracks, you can hear here. I would have prefered to get those, 'cause I hardly found a bad track on them. But they are not available via emusic, so I had to stick to the singles. Enjoy the space ride.

Huh, I forgot the most important thing, for you virtual crate diggers out there. The link to the website of MPM. Check it out. Btw: the streams on Tunes are longer than on the MPM site. So if you really want to listen to something, I recommend you that.

Oh Rawk. It's not only a tough week. This will go on like this until the first of August - end phase of my thesis. No real weekends. But I will survive ;). And I'll flee one weekend to Berlin - yipiiieh. The day was already interesting. Getting up at 5 o'clock in the morning, couldn't finish my corrective actions for the students. After a fourth of my way to university, I fucked up my chain. I didn't wangle the proof any more, that I thought, I would have understood. Returning from university, I tumbled with my bike, fucking of my front tire. But somehow I have to laugh about that. There are those days ... Every time, when I'm having such a day my black humor get's stronger and I have to laugh about the things that happen to me and myself. I only hope I will make it until Saturday, not that some giant truck will roll over me on my way to the bike shop. Haha.

Thats the way to look at it Hermes, I have had weeks like that and you need to sit back and think it could be a lot worse. As for the tumble on the bike, I was just talking last night about the crash that ended my mountain biking career, head first into a tree at 30 miles an hour. I was the one who needed to be taken to the bike shop for repairs. Keep the chin up, August is coming quick
