Just "Be" Part 3: Mondo Grosso

Posted over 4 years ago

Because in our western culture all good things are three (Btw: the Nahuatl - Mexican tribe - prefer in contrast to this the four), here's the third part of the Just "Be" series, with something, that's less cheezy than "Be":http://mog.com/Hermes/blog_post/85427 (sacrilege!). (Part 2 of the spontaneously emerged series on "Michelles blog":http://mog.com/mktackabery/blog_post/85471)

It's Mondo Grosso from Japan, to which I got known a little later than to Be - but only a few months later, shortly after they made their European tour. I don't know much trivia, first I thought they would be a group, now it seems, it's more like one guy with guest musicians. I don't have time right know, to do a deeper investigation, and before MOG, I was just listening and sometimes dancing to music, not memorizing all the nice details ;).His name is Shinichi Osawa and he's the leader and bassist of Mondo Grosso. It seems that he also did a few coops with Towa Tei (Fistula, do ya hear?).The album consits of two parts: live recordings + studio recordings. My favorite live track is "Souffles H", but it has 19MB and is more than 14 min. long, that's too much for MOG.That's why I show you "That's how it is" in its life version (you can skip the first minute, if you're not interested in that festival jubilations) and Souffles H in the "Dub Souffle" version. You just have to believe that the live recording of the last song is REAL jazz, without all that dub stomping, though, I also like this version. More, if someone is interested, later. Now enjoy da jazz and have a nice saturday.

  6. Hermes says Woheee, so much love for Mondo Grosso. I'm positively surprised. First I liked the studio versions more, now I'm more a fan of the live versions. Sadly I only have this album and I don't think, that they released that much. But I'll see ... . Thanks for the appreciation.

  7. ciphermedia says Hermes, nice tracks. I have a Mondo Grosso album I bought about 10 or 12 years ago. About half the tracks are by MG, and the other half are by other Japanese bands/DJs. It's not on my computer, but I'll dig it out & post some when I get a chance (in the midst of working 16 days straight at the moment, so I'm a bit short of time). Got a feeling it's a bit funkier than these tracks, but still pretty good from memory.

  8. Jonh Ingham says Mondo Gross are from the early-mid 90s -- don't know if they're still around. They're from Kyoto and part of the Kyoto Jazz Massive collective, which is why there are so many people on the disc. However there is a core group. They put out several CDs. If they're in my batch of Japanese CDs that got unpacked I'll post a track or two.

  9. Hermes says The album is actually recorded in 1995, at least the live tracks. This was one year, before I bought it. I didn't know of the relation between Kyoto Jazz Massive and Mondo Grosso, but have also something from them (Kyoto). Post it, if you find it :)
