Jazz meets Electronic: Nils Petter Molvær

Posted over 4 years ago

Nils Petter Molvær released in 1997 his groundbreaking album Khmer. The Norwegian jazz trumpeter, composer and producer is since then regarded as pioneer for the fusion of jazz and electronic music. For "Khmer" he won the German "Jahrespreis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik" (annual price of the German record critic) and L.A. Weekly nominated this album as jazz album of the year 1998. In spite of all the prizes it's finally you, who has to like it. I like it a lot, but I like jazz as I like electronic music. One day I like jazz more, the other I'm more on the electric side of life, so it is no big surprise, that I like the fusion of both genres.

The album bruits a slightly melancholic and epic atmosphere. Dominant instruments are the trumpet, drums and sometimes the electric guitar. Of course also synthesizers are used, but they usually consitute the background. If you like the album "Ki-Oku" of DJ Krush and Toshinori Kondo, I'm pretty sure that you will like "Khmer" too and also its successor "Solid Ether". Sadly my rip program refused to take the whole CD, so I can only show show you two songs of the first part of the CD - not my favorite ones, though I like them. None the less they are still quite representative for his style.

As small compensation you get a live recording of one of his concerts. I didn't know the song yet, it must be of one of his new albums, that I still don't know. I guess I have to catch up ;).

  2. mktackabery says nice Hermes, I just recently picked up a release on eMusic called "An American Compliation" which was a bunch of remixes and live performances off this record, and I adore it. I haven't picked up the original records yet, but his sound is so intriguing and unique. I'm with ya.

  5. Hermes says Good, that some of you like it. Jazz is severely underrepresented in MOG, compared to Funk or Soul - at least amongst my "Trusted MOGs". Maybe I'll post more jazz in the next time, though I don't have that much - more Acid Jazz than "real" Jazz. mack: I never heart a remix of his songs, but saw while preparing the post, that there is at least one CD. And I saw a Drum'n'Bass remix on Youtube, but didn't like it much. How I said: I have to catch up ;) glammer: Do you have something of Toshinori without DJ Krush, or also "Ki-Oku"? I love that album. I considered trumpets never as sexy, but as quite expressive instruments. But good, that one can see it like you do. So I guess, I have to learn trumpet ;): The other two alternatives of my choice would be sax or percussion.

  8. glammerhammer says air mez, I do NOT have Toshinori without dj KRUSH..... That is one of my favorite cd's, love "sun is shining"....I am not sure about the other....I'll have to look thru my collection......REALLY....you are so right about jazz. WE should represent it more..I especially like abstract jazz...but really all of it. The Tuesday evening LIVE outdoor jazz at Hollywood and Highland complex just started....I am quite excited about going...I have the perfect outdoor jazz ensemble that allows me to relax and enjoy the tunes...raw sounds......Do you listen to CAM (was dj cam)? He's a nice blend of french hip-hop abstract jazz.....fabulous fusion. I reccomend Soulshine by dj CAM. My fave track is elevation.......... btw: TRUMPETS are hot! really....

  9. Hermes says I know DJ Cam, before the indicated renaming. I don't know "Soulshine", so I guess, I should have a look at that album. Nice, that you have such a jazz band "around the corner". We have a quiet known bassist in town, and I know a very young guy, who's awesome at the guitar. But: only seldom there are acutally jazz concerts. I don't know why. Or I just didn't find them yet. And I'm not sure, if I know "abstract jazz". So post a bit of it, if you have. I'm interested. :)
