WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Hubert Laws 'Family'

Posted about 1 year ago
At the end of November, I visited a friend in Freiburg and we decided to go to "Beats & Öchsle", a monthly event in Freiburgs well known Waldsee, where also the meanwhile legendary "Root Down" takes place. Beats & Öchsle is a winetasting combined with Rainer Trüby on the decks (and sometimes chummy DJs of other labels like the Jazzanova label and its sublabels). "Öchsle" is a German measure of quality related to wine - is seems to be similar but not identical to 'brix' in English - so much with regard to the naming. Every time they present a different wine producer, in November it was a Italian winery which produces only organic wine.As its in the middle of the week, it turned out to be a rather cozy event with enough visitors but far from beeing crowded, what would have destroyed the nice atmosphere. Some of them came primarily because of the winetasting and left early but hell, they missed Rainer Trüby as he got better and better, the more wine he and we drank.Sadly I couldn't stay until the end, as I had to get up early the other day, but it for sure is a highly recommendable event, if you should happen to be there - more like Rainer Trüby & Friends than a big and crowded thing. As Trüby doesn't only produce tracks, but also is a big music collector, I heard mostly latin and soul songs, that I've never heard before, what is a good thing in my perception. And there were two songs, that simply blew me away. First I didn't have the guts to ask him for the tracks, as he isn't the next best DJ of town, but one of the top notch DJs and producers in my musical hemisphere. But the craving for those songs was luckily bigger than my respect, and so I asked his DJ friend, if he knew the song, thatwas currently played. He didn't know and went over to Trüby, which just gave me the cover - sometimes one shouldn't have too much respect for the musicians, especially not in an atmosphere that's so intimate and comfortable as it is there. The track he played was 'Family' of Hubert Laws feat. Debra Laws, released on an album of the same name.Hubert Laws is a world-class flutist and has played with everyone of distinction, as I found out today: Sergio Mendes, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Sarah Vaughan, Roberta Flack, Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, Aretha Franklin and many more. Well, you will find much more information about him on Wikipedia and on "Hubert Laws Website":http://www.hubertlaws.com/.'Family' will be the next vinyl to buy for me.But it's not the only fantastic track, that he made as the following two Youtube-clips will show you. He for sure knows, how to play a flute. "Undecided" from the album "Romeo & Juliet""Bloodshot" from album "The Laws of Jazz"So, thousand thanks for the hint into this direction Rainer. If you should ever happen to be in the Black Forrest or should even happen to live there, check it out: "Beats & Öchsle", once a month "-> calender of events of Waldsee":http://www.waldsee-freiburg.de/veranstaltungen/Highly recommended for wine aficionados and Soul & Latin fans alike.

  2. Hermes says Check it out, if you should happen to come along. You won't regret it. :) You live in Brooklyn N.Y. and don't leave the house? Man, I would get out to watch the skyline by night regularily, I guess. Btw.: that reminds of the scene in Jarmusch's "Night on Earth" with Armin Müller-Stahl when he confuses "Brooklyn" with "Brookland" due to his bad English. Love that movie.

  3. Cody B says Jim J. is da man...The skyline is a breath of fresh air, but you often are sitting in traffic when you see it.
