MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

Slumdog Millionaire

Posted 10 months ago

I'm behind on my movie viewing as we head into "award season", but my fave film of the moment is Slumdog Millionaire, which just won the Best Picture Drama Golden Globe, as well as the three other awards it was nominated for so I'm rather happy. I'm extremely excited about the award for A.R. Rahman for the soundtrack. I know nothing about him other than he is evidently THE GUY to get to score your film in Bollywood. I can see why as the music gripped me from the moment the film started. As I sat there watching the first scene I thought, "I will have to buy this soundtrack."

For those of you who might not have heard of it, Slumdog Millionaire is the latest film by Danny Boyle. It's set in Mumbai and tells the story of Jamal, an orphan from the slums who is a contestant on India's version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" But unlike so many before him, Jamal is actually winning. He is one question away from the grand prize when they break for the night at which point he is arrested on suspicion of cheating. So Jamal explains how he knows the answers, one question at a time and in doing so tells the story of his life and his true love. It's not a pretty story either. (I had originally planned to take my mom with me and after about 20 minutes I thought perhaps it was good she couldn't make it.) But it does have a happy ending and I have to say the kids in the film are not only really cute, but they do a amazing job. Yeah, I'm willing to admit it's highly unlikely anyone would get so lucky as to have every single question somehow relate to certain events that shaped their life, but the film is so uplifting we can overlook that, can't we?

The trailer:

Now, explain to me why, when they have a soundtrack featuring M.I.A. they include a song by the Ting Tings in the trailer. (Don't get me wrong, I like the song, but it's not in the movie.)

Enjoy!

Great movie, I saw it last week. It deserves all the awards and praise it's getting.

I'm going to see it this week. My love for Boyle is stronger than my allergy to 'feel-good films' :)

Thanks for this, Mimi. I'll come back here after I've seen it.

it's definitely not your typical British feel-good movie. I don't want to overhype it, it's just a good story that's well done.

Happy Go Lucky was good too, I've always liked Mike Leigh.

That's good to know, 'cause feel-good movies usually make me roll my eyes.

I haven't seen Happy Go Lucky, will get on that when the DVD is released in the spring. Thanks, D!

Well Anna, you may roll your eyes at the ending but as Dach said, it's not your typical feel-good movie so hopefully you'll enjoy it.  I haven't seen Happy Go Lucky either but will look for the DVD.

Glad you like it!  It's my current "get-me-pumped-up-and-ready-to-face-another-day" song as it puts a big grin on my face as well.

I loved "O...Saya"!  And even though they had Paper Planes in the movie as well, it worked with Slumdog about 500x better than it did in Pineapple Express.  I loved the whole soundtrack and I'm definitely buying it whenever I get a spare $10.

This movie was fantastic, I'm so glad to see it's catching on with more people!

My favorite film of 2008, tied with "Happy-Go-Lucky" and "The Wrestler." And it's one of those "feel-good" films that will also make you occasionally feel sick-at-heart as it proceeds. It's funny, sad, brutal, colorful, crazy, romantic, thrilling, etc. Boyle is brill. (I'm assuming most MOGgers of a certain ilk have seen his breakthrough "Trainspotting," but check out his film "Millions" if you haven't seen it. Beautiful.)

Finally got around to seeing it last night and really dug it, my Mom was a big "So You Want To Be A Millonaire" fan and I owed it to her.

Have been listening to the soundtrack non-stop for a few days now :)

Have you guys heard Latika's Theme song from the OST? It's absolutely gorgeous. I get chills every time I listen to it.

Happy Go Lucky, is a great movie. Sally Hawkins, although she is unknown (to me at least) played it so well, I couldn't imagine any other female playing the part better. LOVED IT!

I also recommend 'Man on Wire
