Who knew? I mean, who da fock KNEW? These freaky old bastids what used ta dress like broads put on da best fockin' in-store rekkid promotion I evah sawr! David Johansen didn't just "Dance Like a Monkey" (an actual hit single, with a cool animated video:)......he IS a monkey. The goddamn King Kong monkey man! Looks, acts, poses and preens like a simian Mick Jagger. And man, does he got Personality too - no crisis about it. Moreover, Mr. Sylvain-squared matches him every step of the way, pleased as punch now to be the guitarist who was not Johnny Thunders. He's alive, and he looks happy to be here. (Okay, so Johansen and Sylvain are the only two original Dolls left, and the rest of the guys look like Guns N' Roses dropouts; they're still damn cool, and together they can play like hell.)In-store performances can sometimes be stilted, sterile affairs - harsh lighting, bad sound, 5-song sets - but after a solid month of several shows a week (see my page for details), this may have been my absolute peak experience. Tower Sunset was wrestled and wrangled into a dark, crowded, sweaty nightclub - and the sound was loud and proud and punchy. The Dolls played about half the new album (the great half, luckily) and then encored with "Looking for a Kiss" and "Personality Crisis" - the whole thing was a half-hour beatdown, harder and rockier than anything they've ever recorded, then off to the signing tables.I have to say, the second song was what absolutely pole-axed me: "Gotta Get Away from Tommy" is the catchiest 2:27 I've heard this year. THIS is a fockin' hit single, and Indie 103.1 should be all over it by now. It's like the Damned's "New Rose" popped and perked and glam-slammed into the sweetest rock candy imaginable. It's the Bubblegum Dolls, and it could be HUGE...so keep ya fingiz crossed! Like, is this a band that deserves to sell a few fockin' rekkids or WAH?

  2. Heli0tr0pe says Me neither, kinda...until recently. I think I might also be a fan of anything Todd Rundgren ever produced though. Anyway, thanks for the comment!
