WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Blue Oyster Cult is the Steely Dan of Metal

Posted over 3 years ago
Vaguely nerdular, quasi-intellectual, Jewish elbow-nudging-ever-so-gently-into-the-ribs college boys from Long Island...can YOU tell them apart? (Hint: one band has their "take" on jazz, the other on metal.) Discuss. Debate. Critique. Buck Becker, meet Donald Dharma!

  1. digworm says for a great time- check out steely dan's live version of boddisattva (citizen dan collection) - some really ripped brother intros (5 min of rambling) the group then can't remember the band's name!

  2. Iren says The big difference is that Steely Dan wasn't there for the dawn of Jazz, but B.O.C. was there for the birth of Metal, and thusly were in a position to help build the common language of the form. Listening to early B.O.C today, it sounds more hard rock than metal, just like AC/DC. Plus in the posted photos the guys on top look like extra's from some bad biker sci-fi flick and the guys on the bottom photo look like accountants.. which one rocks more to you?

  3. Heli0tr0pe says Fair enough, Iren - points well made and taken. For you, I present a less accountant-y and far more rawk-y incarnation of The Dan...
