WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

This Woman is Insanely Amazing

Posted over 3 years ago
This is one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. I think she's even better, certianly as a melodist, than Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake, the two singer-songwriters she might be compared to. And for those interested in the early-'70s Laurel Canyon folk-rock scene, her debut was the first-ever release on David Geffen's storied Asylum Records label. Her life story is amazing too: she was a junkie, prostitute, convict, homeless and a Satanist - sometimes all at once - all before she even began her recording career:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judee_SillShe made Janis Joplin look like Doris Day...but she writes and sings like an absolute angel. Do your damn self a favor and check her out. All two of her albums, plus a set of unreleased demos, have been reissued recently. (Your best best is the lavish 2CD Rhino import "Abracadabra: The Asylum Years," which sounds great, has lots of bonus tracks, and I got on Amazon for under $20.)Long live Judee!

  1. B42 says I received Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock-and-Roll's Legendary Neighborhood by Michael Walker as a gift a couple of months ago and haven't started it yet, but looking forward to knowing and hearing more about this place in this era...I will keep Judee Sill in mind, thanks. 3. Heli0tr0pe says You'll love it, I gay-ron-tee. Also, B42, FYI our fellow MOGger Barney Hoskyns wrote a book on the Laurel Canyon scene too. Haven't read either one, but I did dig Barney's book on the late great Arthur Lee...

  7. ivylander says Heli0trope, you've nailed it this time. The first two albums were in my essential listening pile for years in the '70s, and it was inexplicable to me that she wasn't massive. Then, as often happens, musicians sorta gradually drift out of your world. It was such a delight to discover, about a year ago, that her music was being reissued and, better yet, rediscovered. Hers is indeed a sad, strange story, which could easily overwhelm the fact that she made some of the most unexpectedly beautiful music of her time.

  8. fairportfan says Lovely. I must investigate. Your summary - and the song sample - put me in mind of my own favourite crazy lady, *Dory Previn*. Andre's first wife ("Beware of Young Girls":http://electronictiger.com/avail/girls.mp3 is about her dear friend, Mia Farrow Previn) co-owner of an Oscar for Best Soundtrack, one-time showgirl, songwriter/singer... Once removed at a special stop from a transcontinental flight when she woke up from a nap and began screaming (on my way to where)... Boarded up in the dining room with her mother and baby sister by her father and kept there for months as a child... "(I ain't his child)":http://electronictiger.com/avail/child.mp3. Another brief stint in a locked ward when she was stopped for driving randomly at night, again screaming for no discernible reason (Twenty Mile Zone) And other brilliant, sad, heart-rending reports from the trenches of life and the gender wars "(The Lady with the Braid)":http://electronictiger.com/avail/lady.mp3. And meditations on expectations, aspirations and reality and dreams like "Mythical Kings and Iguanas":http://electronictiger.com/avail/kings.mp3. *Current National Terror Alert Level* Terror Alert Level

  9. ivylander says A very interesting comparison, fairportfan. I hadn't thought of Dory Previn in ages. She is also ripe for rediscovery. The difference, if I'm remembering correctly, is that she is overtly confessional, almost to a fault. Judee Sill, on the other hand, is overtly mystical, again almost to a fault. But I think in both cases their going too far is what makes them great as well as what makes them (unimportantly) flawed.

  10. fairportfan says I was mostly going by the description and by the sound of the sample. They both remind me of what i call the "damaged ladies" that Ray Davies writes about - Little Miss Queen of Darkness, Juke Box Music, Holloway Gaol and <>i>Mirror of Love, one of the scariest love songs since Goffin & King's He Hit Me (and It Felt Like a Kiss).. (BTW - the name is *mike* - feel free to use it instead of the handle, which is a tad more awkward to type...) *Current National Terror Alert Level* Terror Alert Level
