Before hearing Kristin Hersh's solo album, Sunny Border Blue, any one of us could have been a different person. It was at a crowded Ann Arbor Borders appearance in early 2002 that I was first exposed to the dreamlike, sharp yet balanced solo work of this amazing artist. My friend Becca had traveled in from Ohio to see Kristin perform. It was months before I fully understood how nervous and shy she became as we approached Kristin. Becca later gave me a mix cd, urging me to fully immerse myself after the short concert. I purchased the full solo album in late August, absorbing each word and shift of melody. Kristin's work with Throwing Muses was brilliant. Her solo work - as few artists' have been - was unadulterated, strong, and as passionate as her previous work had been, if not more so. The lyrical complexity within the sonic landscapes she envisioned was astounding. Take, for example, "37 Hours":"I dropped a cigarette in my shoeAnd dove in the waterThen i swam until my hair dreadedLike flying on fire"That day i quit smoking and swimmingI heard some advice from aboveDucking under cramming it inIsn't falling in love"Now she is coming out with a new solo album, "Learn to Sing Like a Star." You can hear it free in streaming audio on her official MySpace page:http://www.myspace.com/kristinhersh.While I haven't heard the entire album yet, optimism is strong. Below is her newest video, "In Shock."Now that the album has been released, who knows what may result? It may save music for mankind.
