I have found myself in another retroactive spin when it comes to modern music. Call it time travel, love of anachronistic ventures, or the specific quality of taste affixed to classic musical relevance. Right now my favorite song is the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever." It reminds me of my youth - the days when my mother would sit me on her knee in our favorite old chair and sing "Let me take you down... 'cause I'm going to.. Strawberry fields..." The surreal rememberance of the light streaming through an 80's rainbow prism through our windows reflecting on our walls, the glitzy glory of an era I never knew as we were living in a bygone era, potentially the best era of music that exists in our universe.
I find that I do enjoy some modern music - the kind that can trigger rich emotional wavelengths, meditation periods, mind travels, dream-like states. Even the kind you can get depressed to. But it is so difficult to filter out the horrible, pop-ridden disasters to get to the real gems. I posted a thread quite some time ago asking for suggestions of new bands I might enjoy. I received quite a few responses, some very helpful. So now that I find myself in this lovely predicament again - and since we have droves of new members at MOG these days - I am going to pose the question anew with the Beatles and my long, long unending list of bands on my "you should listen to" list as context.
Who are your favorite groups? What kind of timeless quality does their music embody? What kind of feelings do their best songs elicit? Can you tell me some titles so I can check out the right stuff first? (because sometimes I will listen to the worst song first and become turned off for no reason when there is gold on the rest of the record.) These bands can be new or old, obscure or wildly popular.

Hi Helen, I'm a huge fan of Erykah Badu & her new one 'New Amerykah Part 1: 4th World War', is a glorious mess o' funk that will keep you coming back for more. As much of a fan that I am, I do have to say it took awhile for it to grow on me since it's so different from her previous nu-soul offerings. But it's definitely one of those albums that keeps on giving!
Also, I adore The Cure & always have one or more of their albums on my puter. They just released '4:13' which I'm really enjoying since it's a return to their more adventurous albums.
Goldfrapp's latest 'Seventh Tree' is a sublime slice of ethereal electronic pop that hearkens back to their first more acoustic leanings on their first album. Alison Goldfrapp's voice is glorious & this album is just fantastic.
The Kills 'Midnight Boom' is a raw, ragged yet extremely catchy rock album. You'll be singing along in no time.
There's so many more but I've no time. Enjoy!
Oh boy so many to mention.

Augusts1 - the Erykah Badu album is awesome! I had no idea she was working with so many genres at once.
Had no idea the Cure had a new one. Must check it out.
I do like some Goldfrapp!
Anna - Really love the lyrics of Girls Against Boys. Morphine put me into this dreamy state I can't describe. Great suggestions!'
Re: Wild Beasts - really like the devil's crayon.
Still getting into Madrugada and haven't gotten to check out Archive yet but I'm very interested! :)
