I love Helium. They have to be my favorite band ever. Why? Because of the way Mary Timony plays guitar. Because of the lyrics and symbols in their music. Because of her soft yet striking whispers in the song "Skeleton" from the Dirt of Luck album.
Pirate Prude and The Dirt of Luck are classics. My favorite thing about them is that sometimes the lyrics are mystical, sometimes they are hard-hitting and realistic. Sometimes they rhyme, sometimes they convey deep intelligence, and sometimes they are fun.
Some of my favorite lines: "I am the devil / and here's my fist / I am evil / but I don't exit." - from "Ghost Car" (Pat's Trick single)

Oh man, you just got me where it counts.
Mary and I went to high school together, used to drink beer in the park together, used to sit on the sidewalk and sing Neil Young songs for change together, played in the Godspell pit band together. She and her big brother Pat were my first musical friends, and no matter where I go or whether I ever see her again, she will always be one of the most precious people on the planet to me.
Helium was a great band, with great songs and a cool delivery. I miss her daily. Mary B, you out there???
