Elastica - "Mad Dog God Dam" video, directed by M.I.A.At times I realize that I have not fully absorbed the wonders of modern music. Like when I realized that I hadn't really listened to Elastica's less heralded album The Menace. Not because I didn't want to at the time it was released, more because I was into other things at the time, I guess. So recently, in missing Elastica, I went gone back to find it. And this song has been stuck in my head ever since. I don't think anyone else around me understands it. This video was supposedly directed by M.I.A., who was Justine Frischmann's roommate at the time (according to Wikipedia, which sometimes lies). The song is catchy, cynical, and dynamically screams Elastica to me. In fact, it made me so nostalgic, I have to pose that question. What is everyone from Elastica doing now? When I was a young girl living in Los Angeles County (okay, Claremont),I looked up to Elastica more than almost any other band because they rocked, there were women in the band, you know. They weren't like Garbage - who I also respected - because there was more of that rock thing, and it was coming from the women. It wasn't some rock thing where the guys said "okay, sing something cool to this." Not that Garbage was always like that, I just think it was in the origin, when I really enjoyed what they were coming up with (sorry Garbage). At any rate, Elastica's self-titled debut was amazing to me in my youth. There was the song "Line Up", which had a punchy beat. There was "Blue" which started out mellow and then rocked. There was "See That Animal." There were songs I could relate to. There was even some weird quasi-tribal song that sounded like George Harrison had taken over for a second. And of course, there was a lot of talk about sex, but it was from a completely new perspective. Listening to that album on the beach from a tiny boombox while sipping lemonade was living. So, back to this video. I love the way it is choreographed and edited. It flows so easily from one clip to the next. I love the back beat and the solid bass line. I even like the strange kind of metallic sound over the rest of the rhythm. And of course, the lyrics are fun. So does anyone else like it? I am just wondering. And is there anything else like it in the world? Please let me know.
