I'm Juggling

Posted over 4 years ago
This past weekend I found myself having those delightful spine tingling feelings of hearing new music that rubs your ears in all the right ways. First off Marigold's post on "The Radio Dept.":http://mog.com/Marigold/blog_post/143380 set me off in a listening spree to catch up on what I missed from them. Then The Epochs came into my weekend and suddenly I was torn between the two. Ultimately, I feel confident I'll be able juggle both and give them the loving attention they deserve. The Epochs self-titled debut turned up on iTunes Feb. 5th and I scooped it up with some gift funds. In a flash I knew it was no mistake...the music, lyrics, vocals, and even the font on the Album cover (yeah, the font did it too!)They're an unsigned Indie band from Brooklyn, NY and they're mingling in the sounds of pop, rock, electronic, acoustics and a tad of industrial. Fear not, even with that blend, the album is appropriately intertwined. I fussed a little over which song to include from the album but it came down to the one that caught my aural attraction first...Opposite Sides. Then, once I heard Love Complete...well...do I really have to say it? I feel there may be only one track that doesn't hit the spot. That being Picture of the Sun, but then again...what legitimate relationship doesn't have their trivial differences? I'm sure you'll be hearing more about these fellows and brothers, so let me leave the comprehensive descriptions of the tunes to the professionals. Maybe you could just get a grip on them with me.Their "MySpace":http://www.myspace.com/theepochs has a few more songs to check out. If you make your way, definitely push play on Mouths to Feed. "The Epochs":http://www.theepochs.com/They're giving away an EP of remixes..."Remixes EP Here":http://theepochs.wordpress.com/Fetch the album from itunes or "CD Universe":http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/7585677/a/The+Epochs.htm

  2. indiepixie says very interesting. I saw them live at CMJ and hated the performance- thought they were very juvenile...but i like this song. One of the bandmates contacted me to ask how to improve his performance...and I gave some thoughts...I'd love to see them live again and see how they've improved. Thanks for this. I totally agree. You've modified my opinion a bit. Interesting how bands can grow and evolve, huh? hehe.

  3. HelenMarie says Glad I could help turn the table a bit for you...I think the album is great work. Really you "hated" the live show though...could be one of those I suppose. And they have room to grow so I'll keep my fingers crossed for their live success. Maybe their experience (or more so...lack thereof) contributed to the juvenile like performance. I'm curious of how they felt on stage...did the mate mention it when he contacted you?

  4. indiepixie says here was my initial post: http://mog.com/indiepixie/blog_post/119623 One of the artists', Ryan, joined Mog so he could message me back after that post. What I told him was my truthful opinion of his live show: "To be honest, you could probably tell from the audiences' reaction that the show was not up to par to your recorded music. Truth is I enjoy your style and songs-and was excited to see the show- which is why I thought the performance was lackluster comparatively. Though you were all clearly passionate about your music and earnest during the show itself, down to the sweat and riffs, and I liked some of your affects like the ducktaped guitar, in general there seemed to be a barrier between you boys and the audience.....NY is a tough crowd, especially at CMJ....but I think more fluid interaction with the audience would help- talk to us like we are people, ur amigos, and we will respond. At times, it felt you were so soaked up in the music, you forgot you were surrounded by hundreds...and we wanted to feel something more." Again, I think this live thing could have been a growing-comfortable-on-stage-thing....not a the-guys-can-only-really-record-don't-see-em-live-ever thing... Time will tell...They are getting serious blog raves and touring this summer I believe? As I told Ryan, I'm excited to see him live again next. And I continue to dig the overall sound (sounds 80s pop derivative to me, no?) spread the sunshine, sunshine :)

  5. HelenMarie says Cheers pixie...I even commented on that post, but The Epochs para didn't grab my attn (obviously). Cool that Ryan contacted you for more detail. And a ding for the mog numbers from you. They have a lot of creativity flowing so let's hope it pours onto the stage next time. Thanks for the details...I'll keep your perspective in mind if I get a chance to see 'em. ; )

  6. Marigold says Grr, work is busy. I have skimmed this and must thank you for the kudus SunnyD. I will revisit this when I am home from work and can actually listen to this stuff...from playing it softly it sounded interesting enough. Your so cool. ;)

  7. HelenMarie says Hi MariG...Work is always gettin' in the DAMN way! Haha...no really I've got some too! Thanks for taking a peak. I "must thank you" for The Radio Dept. Truly good good stuff! The Epochs are interesting in a fun and fresh way (fits one of my favorite moods, you know). And oh how I'm into those lyrics on Love Complete. Hope you like but it's certainly okay to say how you really feel if that's not the case. Cheers to your coolness!

  8. Bartleby says My, my, with this post you prove that even in music ladies can multi-task... I must confess their sounds is pretty pleasant and will get a little extra oomph with a nimbler production. Thanks for the introduction... O before I forget, congratulations on your MOW feature. It's so precious to find out about your artistic activities - I knew there was a reason why you're so Sunny ;)

  9. Marigold says "those delightful spine tingling feelings" I love those things as well. That is what is all about isn't it? The never ending quest..I think it is actually a drug of some sort. I have listened twice and watched twice. I like them both. They have a great current pop sound with a lot of other elements of poplar music mixed in. It is very well done. I am always a sucker for layers of sound and texture and this has plenty of it. The only thing that is a little distracting for me is the guys voice...it is kind of nasal sounding. It could just be a preference thing though, I am sure it could grow on me with the great tunes in the background though. I might need to hear more of this to give it a more definitive critique. ;) ...off to the links.

  11. Zeroskilz says They do have an interesting sound. There is a lot of things going on in there for just 4 people. I've seen bands with more people make less noise. I'll have out check out their mySpace page. Thanks for sharing. And just to think, a couple weeks ago I was worried the year was starting out slow. :)

  12. poebegone says first off - i am super glad you like The Radio Dept. because i super love them. secondly - OH what a discovery! i think i'm going to love The Epochs, from what i'm hearing! makes it doubly delightful that your album was "funded". thirdly - check it out, you're MotW! ...ahem, congrats, Helen... ;D i thank the MOG Gazette for letting me know you love Morphine's Cure for Pain. how cool is that?!? that album is in my all-time top ten and i sooo love Morphine. ah, giddiness...

  14. HelenMarie says ??Hay?? B – Ladies and multi-tasking…for sure. Ladies (me particularly) and decision making…eh…occasionally. Thank you for the comment and listening to one of my new favorites and thank you for the congrats (and thank you). One of these days I will paint a picture of your bright image from my mind. ; ) MariG – And you created some of those feelings for me! Thanks for the natural high! The singer does seem to be holding back ??just a tad??, to me. But there’s a song on the album, Mister Frog, where his voice is one of the sexiest (non-nasally) I’ve heard. I’m sure you may feel different about the sexiness but I’m also sure his voice will grow on you, if you want it to that is. I hope you were able to stay for Tug of War on their myspace…? About 3:35 into, it gets kick ass and then they show restraint again. I love it! I should’ve mentioned that above, damn it! Cheers anyhow, thanks for giving them a good go! Hi August! Glad you had a pleasant listen…definitely more pleasant than the last song I posted, right?! Hehe. Zero – I love yours and MariG’s comments about “a lot of things going on in there” and the “layers of sound and texture”. And a good point about bands with more members making less noise/effort. My pleasure sharing, thanks for stopping over! Llay – Quadrupley...??I’m?? super glad you like/love what you’re hearing! Fifthly...Morphine *ROCKS* my -socks- pants off (in a mellow way)! Sixthly...(alright already, sorry) Thanks for the awesome comment! I'm giddy now too. Flux – Certainly “Tuneful”…the beats are great throughout too! Thanks for listening Mr. B

  17. HelenMarie says Ha! Why aren't those damn slashes working anymore...? I never realized how many images of Miss Troy there were until you prompted me to take a quick look for a pic... This being the most recognized... Helen of Troy Dante Gabriel Rossetti 1863 And this being the most modernized (or Americanized)...And look she seems to be equipped with implants and all unless she's only 20 in the painting...? Helen of Troy (1966) Wicks - 001A I then searched for images associated with your beauti of a name and found a city in Bursa...?
    Permalink posted 02/21/2008
  18. poebegone says you may be juggling but i am chuckling! everything about that last comment you posted is too funny. Rossetti's - what a snob, that Helen! check out the supermodelly pout, she knows exactly she's being looked at. Wicks's - ROFL. to add to what you said, Helen of Troy is a redhead, seriously? plus, she's got airsprayed / Photoshopped armpits. aww i am a city in Bursa. that rocks! many thanks for imparting that knowledge. the last time i Googled my name up, i got an old English judge - how unexciting - plus Lac d'Ilay in France.

  19. HelenMarie says Haha! "what a snob, that Helen!" exactly...conceded supermodel of a bitch. I suppose she thinks all the men are after her too. Wick's airsprayed version is ridiculous, right!? And hey...a city in Bursa with purple font and a cute pinky pinstripe icon of a background no less! Way more thrilling than an English judge. ; )

  20. poebegone says that's true! i was going to say i want a wall dotted with the purple font and cute pinky pinstripe icon of a background thingie! it's so me ...on a good day. ;d gotta love the '60s. god knows what the artist was tripping on when he made his Helen of Troy version. btw it just occured to me i now have a new word to refer to your style - Helenic! oh my you'll be worshipped in Greece.

  24. HelenMarie says Hey MSS, I like the way you worded that...thank you! Uh, Mike...I like to spread the warmth from sunny FL. I suppose if I tried to say your comment is the slightest bit perv like, you would come up with an excuse as to why not, so I'll leave it out this time.

  26. Augusts1 says Yes Helen, Mike's comment was quite perv like, hahaha. I'm backing you up on that one! And, um, nice implants on that Helen of Troy painting! They're SO perky, hehe(how's that for a pervy comment? At least I own my pervyness!) Actually I stopped by again to say congrats on being MOW, very cool!(I know it's quite late but I meant to say it in my previous comment)

  27. HelenMarie says Hey August! Thanks for the support...haha! Owning what you've got is very key, and I appreciate you're honesty. Yeah...I don't think she could hold a pencil under those things. ; ) And thanks for congrats. Not late...I'll take nice compliments anytime of the year! I thought of you too, with the albums I mentioned. I put in parenthesis after The Cure album "(not a typo from last week..hehe)" That's happened twice, so I thought it was pretty funny! I do have to admit the Mixed Up album may get a little more rotation nowadays, but Kiss Me..., was the trigger album, you know. Cheers and thanks for stopping back!

  28. Augusts1 says Love your pencil comment, haha. I just watched(for the 1st time) Jacque Demy's "Lola" last night w/the gorgeous Anouk Aimee & I think she'd have the same problem as Helen of Troy! Yea owning is quite key! I did notice that you listed "Kiss Me . . ." as one of your fave albums of all time, how cool is that that we both have the same album listed?! I always knew you were cool but after that comment you are uber cool in my book @; ).

  29. HelenMarie says Taking note...Jacque Demy's "Lola" (meanwhile...I must, I must, I must increase...) Ha...kiddin' You know...flattery will get you everywhere, August! Cheers to being cool! ; )
    Permalink posted 02/26/2008
  30. Augusts1 says "Lola" was Demy's debut feature film & part of the french new wave scene back in the day. It's worth seeing & quite a shocking(at the time in '61, I mean) portrait of a liberated single mother who is a caberet dancer. I'm not so sure it's all that the critics say it is but I've seen some of Jacques other films that I enjoyed, so I wanted to see this. It's a pretty realistic & gritty portrayal of french life, which is what the new wave film movement was about, portraying life as it is & not glossing it over like so many movies from Hollywood. And yes, I know flattery gets me places & friends, hehe! Cheers backatcha Helen, my "I must increase"(haha) uber cool friend.
