R.I.P. Tony Thompson

Posted almost 5 years ago
I’m sure someone else has probably MOGged about this, but here’s my tribute:My older sister sent me a news article this morning about the passing of Tony Thompson, 31, from the 1990s R&B group Hi-Five. Apparently, Thompson, who was working on a solo album, died of a drug overdose. I remember when Hi-Five came on the scene with “I Like the Way (Kissing Game).” That song was the jam! My sisters, my cousin, and I loved Hi-Five even more when we found out the group was from Dallas, Texas (we grew up in North Houston). Hi-Five’s debut album, _Hi-Five_, which featured “I Like the Way” and “Can’t Wait Another Minute,” got so much play on a family trip to Las Vegas in the summer of 1991 that I’m pretty sure if they thought we wouldn’t have missed it, the adults would have mysteriously lost the tape in the Nevada desert. We used to tease my older sister that she and Tony Thompson were going to get married when they grew up because they were close in age, both lived in Texas, and had parents with the same first names (all very silly, I know, but so endearing in hindsight). Rest in Peace.

  5. RGM says I was reffering to this, but thanks... :) The enormous Live Aid charity benefit concert in 1985 saw Thompson playing with the Power Station as well as joining the remaining members of Led Zeppelin on stage (along with Phil Collins) at John F. Kennedy Stadium. During a reunion attempt in 1986, Led Zeppelin again asked Thompson to join them as a replacement for John Bonham; the reunion stalled in part because Thompson was in a serious car accident that year and was unable to continue participating...

  6. Hattie says I agree, Raw; it is sad to think back on that joy and know that such a way tragedy resulted (though not necessarily as a direct result). Sorry for the misunderstanding, RGM, I didn't see the link previously. So, this Tony Thompsonw as a drummer and passed away in 2003.
