MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Artist:

Kevin Michael is a new artist I think we’ll be hearing plenty of soon (hopefully, he can stay true to his neo-soul/hip-hop roots). The 22-year-old Philadelphia native is featured on the Roots’ Home Grown! and has a deal with Downtown Records (they produced Gnarles Barkley’s “St. Elsewhere” if that says anything about this kid’s potential). I first heard about him through the online grapevine. I liked what I heard, but not enough to investigate further. Then there was a blog (including video clips) about him on one of my favorite online clothing sites, karmaloop.com. I’ve been playing this song all day, so I figured I’d MOG about him. Enjoy. Peace, Hattie.

And yeah, you heard right. He said, “I’m stuck on the other side of the door/ She can’t hear me, she can’t feel me/Same thang like Demi Moore.”

He seems like a cool artist. Nice song! Kudos to the cat beat boxin' and playin' the guitar!

Isn't it a nice song, great voice, and shiny lyrics? I'm glad I first heard him live rather than before he goes through the music industry processing machine that takes away the gritty sound of a live performance. I will keep the discoveries coming, JI.

Nice song, Hattie. What you said about hearing him unvarnished is right on point. I hope they don't saddle him up on some beats that drown out the nuances in his vocals. Thanks for the intro.

Nice voice...not to mention he has a cool look and that always helps in our media-run world.

Hattie, is Jill Scott not also from Philly? For some reason (I know they are not the same gender) I got a similar vibe.

Could Philly once again be on the edge of another musical era?

Perhaps, Tommy O. Their sounds are probably similar because of their common neo-soul roots. I think of neo-soul as the more mellow, more cerebral, but lesser known brother in the Hip Hop family.

I love neo-soul, but I have to admit, I don't listen to a lot of the big name neo-soul/Hip Hop artists, like Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, and Common. I like what they stand for, though: integrity in music. They have real talent, so if put in a live venue their pipes and vocals can blow the roof off.

I prefer the sounds of lesser known artists, like Alana Davis and Vivan Green. Its not an anti-establishment move on my part; the sound just appeals to me more (perhaps because it doesn't have that music industry influence yet).

I had to look it up, but yes, Jill Scott is from Philly.

Glad I found this post. I'd recently heard the song he has out, "We All Want The Same Thing" featuring Lupe Fiasco and I was kind of on the fence about it. I wanted to like it cause he seems like a very promising artist but the song doesn't do it for me. Seeing this live performance of "Ghost" however has made me reevaluate giving him another listen.

"Yeah, he also performed "We All Want the Same Thing" at this venue, and it didn't leave a lasting impression on me, either. I'm glad though that this post helped; I think this kid's got the goods.

What's up everyone. Hello Hattie. Thanks for this post. I manage Akil Dasan and we are really excited to be a part of Kevin's project. We've been working with Kevin for about the past year and a half and I don't think you'll be disappointed by the studio album. Because he started with the independent label Downtown Records that put out Gnarls Barkley, his album maintains the integrity of Kevin's ACTUAL sound rather than simply relying hot beats.

Stay Tuned!

Beautiful voice; definitely will keep an eye out for his album. Have a couple cd's by Alana Davis which I really enjoy, and dig Angie Stone's music as well. Thanks for posting!

Thanks, Miles, for the compliment. I need to update my Driving Playlist; it is an ever changing list... very fluid.
