WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

The Great Groon Roadtrip 2007

Posted over 2 years ago
My family has been planning a trip from Charleston, SC, to Indianapolis for a while now. We had talked about camping, and maybe buying a used camper or something. One night, in what can only be described as an ebay-induced fit, I bought one online with the intention of going to pick it up.
Did I mention? It's in Wyoming!
So, now we are adding a stop along the way to Indy, swinging by Deadwood, SD to pick this bad boy up. It's a bit of a detour, but hey, with three kids in the car all under the age of five it should be a real hoot! This is our trip:

So, of course, driving songs are needed. I will be taking my 20GB player, fully stocked, as well as my laptop with more tunes on it, and some of my CDs as well in case of battery issues or something else. Driving songs are a must, but I've always liked to drive to different types of songs. rock, metal, and prog are all good for it. But my favorite kind of driving song? the "motorik" sound from German bands like Kraftwerk and Neu! They wrote songs specifically for driving, full of repetition and driving (pun intended!) rhythms. Here, IMO, is the best one of all.(Oh, the funny part is, with all the extra driving we're doing, we won't have time to camp while in Indy!! Ha ha!)

  1. Groon says Okay, that map came out a lot smaller than I thought it would. Basically, it just says "our starting point", "where the camper is" and "where we're actually going". I put a little red line and green line to show our route too. I would post it larger or something, but I don't think y'all are THAT incredibly interested, right?

  2. Hermes says Hah, beeing a German, I've never heard of those guys. Maybe, I was born too late for this. I love roadtrips - and movies about roadtrips. You're country is big enough for making a really big roadtrip - Germany isn't. But well, one can drive one to two days nonstop, so that's better than nothing. And not having frontiers any more, one can make trip through whole Europe. A trip to Portugal would be nice, I imagine. I think, I'll get some of that "Neu!" and try it on the Autobahn here. That could be fun, though this music is a bit hypnotic in my opinion, what could be a bad idea regarding our traffic density here. But well, one has to try ... . Nice post.

  3. Groon says We might have size when it comes to roadtrips, but guys over there have so much history. I envy the roadtrips you could have, the cities you could go to. You're right, the Neu! can be a bit hypnotic, although I find myself getting into it so much it's anything but. Their third album, Neu! 75 has all the great grooves too, but a little easier to saty focused too. and, of course, if you're going to drive on the Autobahn, a little Kraftwerk might be required!
