WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Confessions of a fallen hipster

Okay, y'all. I have to get this off my chest. I don't know how else to do it, so I'm going to come right out and admit it--I went to a Taylor Hicks concert over the weekend. That's right: I, who have always considered my music to be "cooler than thou" when it comes to obscurity and complexity; I, a prog-rocker from the get go, who loathes everything about the pop-music machine; I, someone who has not paid attention to anything remotely related to the populat music scene since Lou Bega won for "Mambo Number 5" (and don't get me started on that!) - I went to see and feed and pay tribute to the American Idol machine. And here's the real kicker:I had a great time.I don't know how else to say it. It was a lot of fun. For pop music, I guess he's a little different in the fact that he has a bluesy feel to him, and he was fun to watch. The crowd really got into it (seriously-the most avid fans I have ever seen!) and I found myself really impressed by the band that was backing him up. When I was all done, though, I felt the need to come back home and listen to all of my King Crimson albums at full blast to "cleanse" myself.Whew! Glad I got that off my chest.

  2. mutterimieli says I'm not afraid to say I rooted for Taylor and liked his stuff pre-idol. I haven't heard anything post idol yet. Glad you had a great time.

  3. spark735 says confession is good for the soul. i actually just heard a taylor hicks song on the radio that i really liked. and i was shocked. but i take solace in the fact that it was an acoustic version of a song from his pre-idol days. and also that i'm in alabama, and the overexposure is breaking my resistance to all things taylor.

  4. dermahrk says Although I rooted for him all season on Idol, have heard nothing from his new CD, but maybe I should check it out. I would imagine his show would be a fun one.

  5. CGonzalez says Taylor Hicks? Sounds like some mash-up of country songs... I guess confession is good for the soul but isn't A.I. bad for it?
