Okay, no more counting. :-)
But I wanted to drop a quickie and say hi to everyone! I know it's only been a week and a half, but after last month's flurry of posts, it felt really strange to not be touching base with MOG over the holidays. I hope everyone had a great end of the year, however it was celebrated. Me? Cold in Indiana. But no snow. Still, all of you northerners are freakin' crazy, that's all I have to say. I couldn't wait to get back here to the balmy south. Today it was in the 70s, and I was in shorts as much as possible.
Christmas was good. I got a couple of sweet things. Music-wise, I already posted a bit of what I got from my not so secret Santa, Scotfree (thanks, Scot. Haven't had a chance to listen to all of it yet, but I'm diggint what I'm hearing so far!) Also, a good friend of mine (also named Scott) who I've been trying to get on MOG for almost two years now, but he refuses to bite, gave me the first Harmonia album, Musik Von Harmonia. Harmonia was a geniune super-group, consisting of Michael Rother from Neu!, and the two guys from Cluster. They release a couple of great albums in the 70s, still get together from time to time, and are one of the pioneer of electronic music. Part otherwordly cosmic, part driving and noise, they carved out their own slice of krautrock and influenced a generation to come. (All you Clash fans can differ on this, but Brian Eno even called Harmonia "the most important band in the world" at some point.) Anyway, this album goes from Tangerine Dream-like ambient to Neu!-like pulse. I uploaded one of the latter songs. In the red button, you have "Dino."

I think the gift I'm most excited about, though, is this:

Hopefully soon, I'll be pouring a bottle of my own brew! Y'all are most welcome to stop on by and sample it.

so will you be posting abut the other half of Neu----La Dusseldorf often wondered of them. glad you had a good holiday. a few years ago we used to bottle home brew after dance practice in the spring so we would have somthing for the summer.
Send me a bottle:-)
Not to be negative or anything, but does it surprise you that Brian Eno would label an electronica group as the most important? Sort of like, say, Joe Satriani calling Coldplay the most important group. (referring to Satriani's suit against Coldplay for copying his tune in their title song Viva la Vida. And if you've compared the two, you may conclude, as I have, that Satch has a point) Or maybe David Gilmour callin RPWL (Floyd cover band) the most important.
Having said that, though, they sound pretty good within the genre.
Anyway, just sitting here at work starting my evening's activities early.
Real good to have you back.
the mothership has returned
cpeterson: believe it or not, I have no La Dusseldorf as of yet. My friend I mentioned above just got one of their albums and told me in no uncertain terms I had to get it. so, looks like I will one of these days!
John: think I might just do that. You raise a good point about Eno, too. Still, it is pretty high praise, I think. Good to be back!
inrumford: if only I had posted some Parliament!
Welcome back Chuck! Long time no post! :P
Homebrew! Nice! I recently starting breaking free of a several year obsession of brewing. Good luck. It's fun and frusterating at the same time. Remember, SANITIZE!
Thanks, Mike! I remember you talking about homebrewing before. Any tips you have would be most appreciated (I'll keep that sanitize thing in mind!). So, you're giving it up, eh?
My first tip will be don't get your hopes up to high with a mrbeer kit. While its a great way to get into the hobby they do not have the best track record for quality. It really is brewing at it's most basic of levels. Not to be a downer. I'm just warning you. I won't go on here. But feel free to send me a message whenever you have any questions. I would be more then happy to give home brewing advice.
I'm giving it up, just scaling back. Its hard to stay under 200 lbs when you have 4 five gallon kegs full of homebrew in the beer fridge. It had to be done for my health! I will still brew, but maybe 2-4 batches a year instead of 15-20.
in the second paragraph it should read "I'm NOT giving it up..." (not in all caps and bold)
Well, to be honest I kind of figured that with the Mr. Beer. But I figured it could at least let me get my foot in the door, see if I liked it enough to maybe upgrade in the future. And if, in the process, I make a couple of drinkable batches in the process, moreso the better, right?
And thanks for the offer of help. I have a feeling I'll be calling on you from time to time! Oh--do you know of any online communities about it? I'm sure there are some, but wondered if you had a suggestion on where to go for more info.
glad to see you back, hope you have a great 2009
thanks, Coop! You, too!
I would just hate for you to brew it not knowing and then never try it again, if your experience is unpleasent. My friend used to tell me before I brewed is that if your first batch is "drinkable" and kinda tastes like beer its a success. It sounds like your instincts are right and you kind of know what to expect.
http://www.northernbrewer.com/ happens to be my local HBS. They also have a great forum which was/is very helpful to me when I first started brewing. I also had friends that had gone on before which helped guide me through the beginning stages.
my good friend www.donosborn.com has some great step by step instructional videos in his homebrew and brewing sections. i would recomend checking his extract brewing section.
Oh and good luck tomorrow, first days back are always a test!
Thanks, Kevin! Crossing my fingers!
Mike: thanks as well. Will definitely check those videos out.
welcome back to the fold! glad you're diggin' the goods, had a lot of fun assembling it..that's a great groove Harmonia's laying down - over way to fast! Hey, I'm a big Clash fan, yet I'd be tempted to call Eno the most important....don't thay all get 15 minutes per Andy???
Mike, we'll have to reserve that for some future time, I guess.
Annie: I promise. Unless, of course, the numbers help to preserve the integrity and intent of the post. You know, if it's essential to the character or anything like that. Funny you mention lessons. I went to school today wondering what I would tell my students if they asked me what I got for Christmas. Not that it's wrong or anything, but that's not a conversation I was looking forward to having. Thankfully, no one did.
Astronot: Definitely keep these guys in mind next time you're looking for new stuff. I have two of their albums now, and both are good. For a more relaxed approach, De Luxe is a good Harmonia album.
Chuck, I left a comment this morning but apparently the MOGods smote it down. I think it said something about at times, though I'm a big Clash fan, Eno himself was the only band that mattered to me. So if he says such of another talented unit then I suppose it's worthy of the Clash challenge. I like the tune...it's too short :( welcome back to the fold
Even if this disappears..you should be MOGGER of the month for December and maybe January too, just for good measure.
Scot, I saw the notification that you had posted, but couldn't find it. I'm glad you checked back in. I agree with it being too short. There's something about that pulsing, motoric drive that screams for length, I think. I can listen to a ten-plus-minute thing like "Hallogallo" and be upset that it ends so quickly!
Cody, thanks for the props, although I still contend it was a group effort--I just mentioned it first!
