WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

#22 Ten more to go

Posted 10 months ago

I guess nine, after this, right?

I promised 31 content-filled posts at the beginning of the month, and I have to say I never realized it would be this hard! I guess I shouldn't be surprised, though. During my not-quite-two years here there have been weeks and weeks on end where I had nothing to post about, so the fact that it is catching up with me isn't really all that newsworthy.

What I wanted to do, quickly, was reflect on how these last two weeks have changed my perspective on MOG, if you don't mind.

For me, anyway, MOG has changed since December started. MOG has always been great, but these last few months we've been noticing a growing discontent among the masses for whatever reason. The community aspect was getting lost, it seemed, in a morass of technical issues, a feeling of disconnect between the MOGgers and the bloggers, and a feeling of uncertainty about where the site was headed and how much we would still be a part of it. I don't know about you guys, but these last two weeks have been almost (but not quite) as exciting for me as it was back in the day after I first joined. I really appreciate how so many of you joined me in trying to step it up around here, and I honestly feel like it's made a huge difference. Instead of getting on MOG because "I might as well" I've been coming home from work honestly anticipating reading the other posts, excited about what I might find. The fact that many of the technical issues have been fixed over the last couple of weeks have really helped out, too.

I've been involved in more discussions than I have in a long time as well, due in part ti effort to participate and comment more, and lurk less. I haven't been able to get on everyone's posts, simply because of time issues and a lack of something to say (I know there are some people out there who like to comment on every post they read, just to let the OP know they were there, but I've never been one to do that).

For me, MOG really has changed, and I'm excited about what the new year will bring. Let's keep it up!

Since I'm packing content into all of these, here's a video to ruin all of the feel-goodness going on these days! It's a live version of Faust, playing "It's a Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl."

Couldn't agree more. A switch got flicked a few weeks back, and it's been steady going ever since. I also come home anticipating what I'll find, and trying to come up with ideas to post.

When you think of it, what's happened is that we've built a community within a community, proving that we really all can live together. MOG now serves multiple purposes (it probably always did, or hoped to anyway) and we can pick and choose which ones we wish to be a part of.

    I like my choice.

I don't have any Faust, believe it or not. I've looked and searched but never found nay in the Sally Anns and thrift stores. (I was looking for vinyl) Specifically, didn't they do a clear album many years ago? My wife seems to remember it and says it was way beyond the music of the day.

Nice one groon , I too have been liking whats been happening here.By the way I have searched for Faust vinyl for years and never seen any, though I know cd's are available. I see that this is a recent video so they are back performing again. Always a pleasure to see your posts

I too have noticed a revitalization on Mog lately (thanks in no small part to your daily post challenge). Also, since Mog moved servers not only has the speed increased dramaticly, but I can upload songs again from work.

Not only was it clear vinyl, John, the sleeve was clear, and the whole shebang was put into a clear cover.  The lyrics were written on the sleeve in red, and on the cover was a picture of an X-ray of a hand raised in a fist.  Transparant as well, so you could see right through the whole record from beginning to end:

This remains my personal holy grail of records buying, although the music on that album itself is almost unlistenable, it's so far out there.  Every couple of months or so I pull out my mp3 of it and listen to it, to see if I've "grown" enough to appreciate it.  Not yet.  Everything after that, though, is highly recommended listening IMO.  Get Faust IV first, I think.

Faust LPs do show up on ebay, from time to time, but fetch pretty high prices for original versions.  I think there have been some reissues lately, but I'm not sure how to tell which is which.

cpeterson, I know they did reform in the 90s (and put out a couple of really good albums, too) and have toured up until recently.  If I remember, one of the members died and there was some dispute as to who owned the Faust name. I don't know if it's veen resolved or not.

democlez: I wish I could get on it from work!  But at least the time I have at homw is more efficient.

While your content is on the rise...your comments have been on a decline.

I had planned to post a visual graph that represents your posting to comment ratio, but I can't even get x-mas shopping done.  So you lucked out Groony.

You mean, my comments on other people's posts?  Or people's comments on my posts?

Your comments on other people's posts....

BTW...why do you look so grumpy in your avatar?

Now I'm intrigued--how could you possibly know or monitor every post I've commented on?  I believe, though, I've more or less kept up with my original intent of commenting on three posts a day.  There have been one or two days when I haven't been able to get on MOG at all, though, so that's why I said more or less.

You're the second person who asked me about looking grumpy in that pic.  I don't see it, I think I just look "thoughtful" but maybe I'm missing something.

I think it's the eyes Chuck...thoughtful eyes are less squinty in my opinion.  You look a bit fearce....I'm a bit afraid of this avatar...

Hmmm . . . I'll have to go back into my photos and see if I can find something that makes me look a little friendlier.

I agree with how hard this has been. With school in the mix staying on top of others posts, as well as mine has been hard. I will say though that outside the lesser amount of comments I have been seeing, things seem pretty good around these parts.

And I think the comment thing is just a mixture of the euphoria of the initial week or so dying down into some kind of norm, plus everyone getting busy for the holidays.  In retrospect, December is not the ideal month for all of us to be kicking it up around here.  I'm going to have to post a lot this next week, because I'm leaving on Christmas day for Indiana and don't know what my internet situation will be until I return.

Yes, MOG has felt much more alive of late. I guess I forgot that the amount of pleasure derived from MOGging is proportional to the amount of effort put in.

Feel good about yourself mate. Your challenge forced me to make the effort when in th elast few months it's been all too easy to be tired and watch rubbish tv rather than do something Moggish.

I remember that Faust album package! It seems to have been forgoten by those who make lists, but should be in the top 10.

Jonh--I'm just glad that other people were as willing as I was to try and step it up around here.

Come to think of it, I never have seen that album on any sort of list!  Its' one of the most striking packages ever created, so that's a shame.
