Have you heard the new Don Caballero? Somehow, this release completely slipped my notice until a couple of weeks ago, I found out about it through a happy accident.
Don Caballero's been kickin' it for over 15 years now, (with an 8 or 9-year hiatus in the middle of that) and has, with the new release Punkgasm, put out quite a few albums along the way. However, this is the first album that ever contained any tracks with vocals. I mention that not because I plan on posting that song, but just for the novelty of it. there's about 4 songs with lyrics, and while they're not bad, that's not what one listens to Don Caballero for. Instead, you listen for the sheer talent of complex, intricate, instrumental songwriting with Damon Che on the drums at its center.
While not as great as some of their other releases, this album is good enough to make it on my top ten of 2008 list. Of course, since I've purchased exactly TWO albums from 2008, that doesn't really say much!

Loving this so far---had no idea Don Cab had a new release. That really slipped through the cracks.
So do we know who's singing on the new stuff?
had not heard it until now, but I am liking the sound
astronot, there's no credits listed on the cd cover at all, but I've heard from others, and suspect anyway, that it's Damon. I know he sings in his side band The Speaking Canaries.
Kevin, glad you're liking it.
Two in a year? Oh man. My wife wishes I could say that. This is power-filled stuff. Thanks, Groon.
Math Rock rules!
Glad to hear people are still listening to this stuff, kind of Prog Rock-ish isn't it?
Klyde. glad you're digging it. My pleasure.
Dave, definitely on the prog side, although I suspect a lot of math rockers would deny that vehemently. But you got yer odd time signatures, yer free-form approach to song structure, and yer tendancy for songs to stratch beyond three or four minutes (not in this case, but the first track on the album is 9-something). So yeah, I'd call it prog-ish!
ooh. i love me some Don Cab and have yet to hear Punkgasm. Damon sang in World Class Listening Problem, which came before this one and is the last of theirs i have. and anyway, with the non-original lineup that he got together, i guess he feels more free to do what he wants.
Ilay, are you sure he sang on that one? I don't remember that offhand.
Have you heard The Speaking Canaries, where he sings and plays guitar? Very different. I saw them live--me and about four other people, which was very sad. Talked to Damon for a while. He was totally cool, gave me a free vinyl copy of their album because I didn't have any cash on hand. When I saw them with Don Cab, however, he was pissed off and not very talkative.
aaagghhh!! you're right! i'm listening to it right now on my iTunes and there is no singing. but i heard him singing ... where did i hear him singing? now i'm very lost and confused.
[ calming self down ]
no, i haven't heard The Speaking Canaries. is it on the same prog/math rock vein or something else altogether? wow, he gave you a free copy, huh? that's cool. i'll try to look for something of theirs, thanks.
...dammit! where'd i hear him sing...? pffft. (+
mmmm, those drums sound good and I like the way they are recorded (sound and place in the mix).
Yeah, Cody, if there's one thing that's going to sound good on a Don Cab album, it's the drums. Damon really and truly is the man. I've seen a lot of great drummers in my day, but he's the only one where if I wasn't watching myself what he did, I would never believe it.
I feel the same way about Tony Allen, but also..there seems to be a problem with my ears, where I don't like the way drums sound in todays recordings..Probably cause I'm so used to the boom bap of JB and other 60's/70's drum sounds.
never heard this man but it sounds very "Robert Fripp ish" to me
I can see that--there's definitely a King Crimson element to their music.
