WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

A Trip Down Memory Lane: My Grandma's Records

Posted about 1 year ago

My grandma had a stack of old 78 rpm records, and whenever we would visit her in Ohio I would spend countless hours listening to those old recordings. A lot of the artists are people who I've never heard of in any other context, but among the discs are a couple of gems, including some Phil Harris and Spike Jones. I don't care how old the songs are, they're still well worth the listen.

Sadly, my grandma died several years ago at the amazing age of 98, and the only thing I asked for was those 78s. the problem? I don't have a record player that can play them anymore! Arrrgh!

Still, our recent discovery of mixwit has helped somewhat, as some of those old songs can be found and put in a new mixtape! So, below are five of the songs I remember listening to the most:

1) Spike Jones -- Der Fuehrer's Face

2) Spike Jones -- Yes! We Have No Bananas

3) Phil Harris - Smoke, Smoke, Smoke

4) Phil Harris - Ding dong daddy from Dumas

5) Phil Harris - He's His Own Grandpa

Oh thank heaven you didn't title it 'My Grandma's Underwear'.

I got as far as the title.

I'm read the rest and listening to the great songs.

    Spike cracks me up

Sadly I think "My Grandma's Underwear" would get more reads!

I've always like Spike.  I don't think I can watch anything World War II related without singing that song to myself at some point.

I can remember when Nick at Nite used to show Spike Jones and Ernie Kovacs reruns.  Man, why don't they do that anymore, that was some great television.

Man, I really gotta put some Spike on CD for the kids.

contra, when I was making this tonight I was thinking the same thing--my kids would love some of this stuff!  And add to that the fact that Phil was the voice of Baloo?  It's a slam dunk.

That's pretty cool.  It's nice to know these old songs aren't all dying out and being forgotten.

Ha!  What movie is that from?

Didn't Ray Stevens or someone do a version of this several years ago?

It's from "The Stupids", a entertaining flick to watch if your stoned and/or drunk out of your mind. I have a hard time believing it got translated into ANY other language, but there ya go.

Sweet Mixwit Groon.  I love Spike Jones.  I highly recommend the Spiked! collection.  Comes with a really sweet booklet.  I've seen players that can play 78's at antique stores and I keep wanting to buy one but I never do.  It's amazing how many shops still have the old records to buy.  The internet archive has some old Spike Jones shows and stuff http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=spike%20jones.  They've also got a lot of Phil Harris http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=phil%20harris.

Fistula: thanks for the links and info.  I'll have to check them out.  I didn't even know that there were any Spike Jones sort of collections out, although it stands to reason.  I've also seen those older record players in stores but never really considered buying one.  Think I'll have to revisit that.

dharmachris: I've always contended that Tom Arnold is a lot funnier than most people give him credit for, although he has made some seriously bad film decisions in the past.
