Gryphon: Medieval music with a twinge of rock.

Posted about 1 year ago
Gryphon was a group from the 1970s that incorporated more than their fair share of medieval sounds into their music. In fact, their first album can't really be considered "rock" at all--it's all traditional arrangements and medieval/renaissance style. They put out five albums, and each one became progressively more rock in sound. Their third album, Red Queen to Gryphon Three, is considered by most to be their finest hour, and it is one incredible record, IMO. Four tracks, each about 10 minutes long, that combine the traditional and modern seamlessly. Not only are there unique songs on this album, but also unique instrumentation, to say the least. We've seen recorders occasionally (Gentle Gian, ahem, ahem), and I can even name more than one band with a bassoon, but Gryphon uses a crumhorn, for Crisp's sake! What's a crumhorn, you ask? Here:Pretty unique, to say the least. I couldn't tell you what it sounds like, but I'm fairly certain you can hear one in thi track somewhere. This is the second song on the album, "Second Spasm."

  4. Groon says I know OF 'em--Phil Collins' "other" band. I've heard that some of their stuff is great, some is just so-so, but I don't know which is which, to tell the truth. Usually, in prog or prog related music, the general rule is "the earlier the better," but that's not always set in stone. I do know that at some point, Collins left and they sort of reformed without him, apparantly still making some pretty good fusion/rock.

  5. Groon says The best place to go if you want to learn more is the GEPR, a big database of prog-related music. the Brand X page is at http://gepr.net/bifram.html. Scroll down a little to find it. This is a great site with a ton of info.

  6. ZZTodd says sweet, thanks for the info. i think the song i heard was off their first album, so that would fit the "earlier the better" rule

  7. Doomsayer2001 says This sort stuff has a small following in the metal underground, it's called folk metal. Personally, I think I'd rather be strapped down and have my... well, nevermind. The rock part of this isn't to bad, it reminds me of Iron Butterfly or some other hippie band, but I can live without the folk stuff.
