Gryphon was a group from the 1970s that incorporated more than their fair share of medieval sounds into their music. In fact, their first album can't really be considered "rock" at all--it's all traditional arrangements and medieval/renaissance style. They put out five albums, and each one became progressively more rock in sound. Their third album, Red Queen to Gryphon Three, is considered by most to be their finest hour, and it is one incredible record, IMO. Four tracks, each about 10 minutes long, that combine the traditional and modern seamlessly.
Not only are there unique songs on this album, but also unique instrumentation, to say the least. We've seen recorders occasionally (Gentle Gian, ahem, ahem), and I can even name more than one band with a bassoon, but Gryphon uses a crumhorn, for Crisp's sake! What's a crumhorn, you ask? Here:
Pretty unique, to say the least. I couldn't tell you what it sounds like, but I'm fairly certain you can hear one in thi track somewhere. This is the second song on the album, "Second Spasm."
