I think the real problem is that their tracks will have some DRM that will not work on my ipod - Smaller bands should be giving away their music anyway, and making money off of:
1. Touring
2. Shirts
3. Cool stuff (Vinyl, limited edition releases, great liner notes, belt buckels...)

Everybody's got ideas, nobody's got the answer. I wonder when we'll be able to come up with a model that really works... and whether there is a way to have the system really benefit the artists.

actually, there is a model that works: drinking! oops, sorry, i was momentarily distracted by your avatar...
there is a model that works, the question is will the label's agree to high-quality, DRM free downloads. so far they haven't, and one wonders how long the publc will continue to accept 128k, crippled music, and whether the labels themselves won't eventually be rendered obsolete by a direct-from-the-artist, decentralized distribution system.
