I just finished doing a 2 week visiting artist residency in Boston at the Berklee College of Music. Apart from doing lectues and masterclasses on a broad variety of subjects, I was also obligated to sit in on selected classes, chime in and to give my points of view as much as possible. Yeah, "Protect Ya Neck". I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this. I was in Battery Studios with Ali Shaheed Muhammad in NY in 1993. He was producing some tracks for me at the time and told me to "Check this out, G. This is the illest shit happening now". I responded most to the diversity of approaches and how unique everyone sounded, even though they had some obvious influences.Meth
