WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

My Love Affair With Polvo

Posted over 2 years ago
I know that people use the phrase, the "Fill In The Blank" Album changed my life, but I honestly think I can say that Today's Active Lifestyles changed mine, or definitely jumpstarted it. Back in 1993, I had (still have) a friend that worked at the college radio station and he let me borrow the promo copy, and I still remember when "Lazy Comet" came on, I totally freaked. 1. Grand Palace Records says I came from a small cow-poke town (even one guy that was actually a cow-poker but I will leave that at that) in Middle Tennessee (still live near there, and I am never gonna leave), named Mt Juliet, at the time it was famous for one thing, Charlie Daniels lived there, and now because stupid Kings Of Leon are from there. This right when the internet started really kicking and before Napster and all that, so you got your music from one place College Radio. We could pick up 91.1 ROCK, the Vanderbilt station, which is where I heard Nirvana before the became all big shit, and was already over it by the time. Anyway, my point is I had little or no exposure to Indie music or even just Good Music. My dad only liked James Taylor (now he likes nothing), and usually never even turned on his car radio, so again pre-college my music scope was pretty limited. When I first heard what Polvo was doing, something clicked, and I changed my major from Pre-Law to Recording Industry and began DJing at the MTSU Station, playing mostly Merge and Kill Rock Stars stuff, and playing tons of my 45s, I would actually pack a backpack of all of my stuff to carry it up there becasue their promos were limited. I was there when we first got our frequency, and no longer broadcast though the TV station (it was so lame when I started). From there I started attending shows, mainly in Nashville at Lucy's Record Shop (to which I totally owe the store I own now, right down to being Dog Friendly, Lucy was the owners Dog's name). I saw everything from Achers Of Loaf on thier first tour to Yo La Tengo in a room the size of my bedroom to Jawbox (maybe the best show I have ever sceen). Now I have been working in Music Publishing for almost 10 years, and have started a label and a record shop, and I am honestly not sure if any of that would have happened if I woul dnot have heard "Lazy Comet" that time. So now that I have stripped my musical skin to the bone, any instance that you guys can point to in your own life where a single album or song actually changed your life?

  2. lemontwist says Wow! I don't think I can say that any album has really had that much power over me... but I'm still young. :)
