I had the pleasure of discovering an incredible album yesterday, thanks to NYC's best radio station WFUV (yes, NYC radio is pretty awful these days, but FUV is one of the few exceptions, and delightfully non-commercial). The album is Los Lobos' 1992 release Kiko. I always liked what I heard from this band but just now realize that they are one of the more underappreciated and misunderstood bands in America (thanks in no small part to the success of La Bamba) - with an exceptional guitarist in David Hidalgo to boot. I had no clue as to their true talents until I heard the song Kiko and the Lavender Moon on the radio, and subsequently downloaded the entire Kiko album. It's a masterpiece from start to end. It's more experimental than you'd expect from Los Lobos as many unusual sounds and textures are infused into the mix to compliment their eclectic roots-rock influences. The one song I was familiar with is 'When The Circus Comes To Town' which I always thought to be one of Phish's finer slow tunes - cover or otherwise - with a great progression and melody. That is just the tip of the iceberg of this offering though, so I implore you to check it out for yourself (if you haven't already beat me to the punch).*Disclaimer* I couldn't upload the AAC tracks from Itunes and don't have an MP3 converter, so I uploaded a live version of Peace.
