Dope hooks from Black Sheep

Posted over 4 years ago
Black Sheep were members of the Native Tongues musical collective based in NY. The two artists that comprised Black Sheep were native New Yorkers Andres "Dres" Titus and William "Mista Lawnge" McLean, and their debut album was the brilliant '91 album entitled A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing. It would be the duo's centerpiece as their '94 follow-up release entitled Non-Fiction suffered due to virtually no promotion or airplay as well as not being on par with their debut. Black Sheep broke apart shortly after Non-Fiction's release.A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing is an immensely satisfying listen. Clever lyrics, mad skills and humour, great samples, and bouncin' beats are all reasons why this remains one of my absolute favourite 'old school' hip hop classics. Here's 'Butt In The Meantime' with just enough of a lil' funk vibe to make the 'funky friday' cut: Native Tongues wiki bio:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_Tongues_PosseBlack Sheep - official site:http://www.myspace.com/blacksheep

  2. The Serenity Vortex says Strobelite Honey seems to be blank Girlcrawl. The other stuff is cool and went well with the Eric B post by Sterfish. I think the record cover is dodgy as hell though. Are sheep street? lol.

  6. Oatmeal says Yeah this is a fantastic album, I left the tape cassette in my car stereo for weeks on end. There was really no let down on the album, great production and entertaining subject matter. I remember being pretty disappointed by the follow up.

  7. Marigold says Ha! I never saw this one comin from you! Great stuff. Hearing this brings me back to the early 90's. I remember this time of my life well. I was in the military and my roommate played this cd way tooooooooo much. I ended up finding a liking for it. This and early Tribe Called Quest always brings back fond memories. Thanks for conjuring up great times in my past. ...I often wonder what Clifton Bryant is up to these days. He was from Macomb, Mississippi.....what a great guy..I miss his company.

  11. Girlcrawl says UffinGreg - concur, and almost posted that one. Thanks for listening and leaving a comment! Oatmeal - agree that it's solid album from start to end; Cheers! Mariglod - forgot I could mix it up aye? Glad that you enjoyed, and that it evoked fond memories for you :-) PopeyePete & oceanrain - you two are fabulous fellow mogsters; always appreciate the comments, and you both contribute such great MOG musical content! SunsineDaydream - Love the Tribe Called Quest, and most of the Native Tongues artists actually. Thanks much for listening and commenting, and you are posting fabulously interesting music on your site - well-done, and glad you're about the Mog-o-sphere!!

  12. TroyPowers says Definitely a classic album. It's too bad they only had one in them. I agree with UG on "You Mean I'm not..." Hilarious. Hip-hop needs more of that type of humor right now. I was at an old school party a few weeks ago, and the DJ played "The Choice Is Yours." People still get low at "Engine, engine number 9..." Great shit. Unfortunately, this album has gotten away from me somewhere along the line. Gotta see if I can find another copy. Great post, Girlcrawl. By the way, is a girlcrawl anything like a pub crawl? If so, I think I've done that before. :)

  13. Girlcrawl says TroyPowers - Thanks so much for dropping by and giving a listen; fantastic comment. Agree that the hip-hop genre could use some positive or even clever humour right about now - 'The Choice Is Yours' is a great song. Regarding your question...wish I had a witty response, but afraid girlcrawl is merely a moniker of mine from years ago (think I created to use as a band name, then intended to use for my club, and somehow friends began referring to me as 'the girlcrawl'). Probably many ways to interpret, but do not doubt that you have been on a few 'girlcrawls' in your day :-). Cheers!
