The exquisite Cuban songstress Omara Portuondo has been a fixture upon the Cuban music scene since the early 1950's performing in numerous groups including the female vocal quartet Cuarteto Las D'Aida. Although Portuondo recorded a solo LP in 1959 entitled 'Magia Negra' and began a solo career two years later, she continued performing with the popular Aida quartet for fifteen years. Omara has endured achieving diva status in Cuba and notable, but somewhat limited, recognition abroad. After Ry Cooder included the legendary singer on the immensely successful '96 'Buena Vista Social Club' album and the 'Buena Vista Social Club Presents Omara Portuondo' LP was released in 2000, Omara Portuondo finally achieved the international acclaim she so richly deserved.

I am partial to "Francisco Guayabal" I'll try to get it in comments soon. Great post. 93 degrees today and hot Cubano music .... I'd like to get back for a bit. I miss that sad little island.
Anyway this is my Compay pick. Also fairly well known.
