Omara Portuondo sings 'Veinte Anos' - modern Cuban bolero

Posted over 2 years ago
The exquisite Cuban songstress Omara Portuondo has been a fixture upon the Cuban music scene since the early 1950's performing in numerous groups including the female vocal quartet Cuarteto Las D'Aida. Although Portuondo recorded a solo LP in 1959 entitled 'Magia Negra' and began a solo career two years later, she continued performing with the popular Aida quartet for fifteen years. Omara has endured achieving diva status in Cuba and notable, but somewhat limited, recognition abroad. After Ry Cooder included the legendary singer on the immensely successful '96 'Buena Vista Social Club' album and the 'Buena Vista Social Club Presents Omara Portuondo' LP was released in 2000, Omara Portuondo finally achieved the international acclaim she so richly deserved.Omara (joined by Compay Segundo) sings 'Veinte Anos' composed by the grande dame of Cuban music Maria Teresa Vera.Excellent PBS site devoted to the Buena Vista Social Club project/film:http://www.pbs.org/buenavista/film/index.htmlRead more on Omara at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omara_PortuondoCheck out I am's boppin' Cuban Jazz post: http://mog.com/I_am/blog_post/93456

  1. I am says Cyn, you saucy minx you. This is the music of love. Erotic love. Ha cha cha cha. I found a Compay track posted by "RM185,":http://mog.com/RM185 it's a fairly popular track. Easy to see why.

I am partial to "Francisco Guayabal" I'll try to get it in comments soon. Great post. 93 degrees today and hot Cubano music .... I'd like to get back for a bit. I miss that sad little island.

  2. I am says I can't believe I am the first with a Compay Segundo post. That just boggle's the imagination.

Anyway this is my Compay pick. Also fairly well known.

  3. I Am's MOG Vault says Just had a funny thought that lead to this: "You are tempestuous, I love that! Wow, oh wowee wow." If there is ever a mood maker, Omara does it in spades. Thanks for the props.

  4. Girlcrawl says ‘Saucy minx’ aye – love it; that’s the first MOG nickname that I’ve been given, and it’s a keeper or I’m claiming it anyways :-). Really appreciate the added tracks; they are muy caliente (very hot) – and cha, cha, cha you spicy latin papa you! Must look more closely at Compay Segundo – know he had a long and rather distinguished career in Cuba, but am only familiar with a few tunes from various collections/collaborations. The Fransisco Guayabal track is faultless! Love the Walken For President video – hysterical, and I’d vote for him in 2008; will watch that a few times, and so glad your ‘funny thought’ lead to it though perhaps I should be worried about you! :-) You made my entire week – thanks chap!

  5. Armando 'Chocolate' Armenteros from the Son Cubano NYC - Cuban Roots New York Spices 1972-82 compilation cd. This great lil' track is entitled Chocolate En C7, and was recorded in 1976. '>I am posted a fabulous Catus Mambo tune (the track is infectiously catchy) that will have you shakin' your congas! Give it a listen at: http://mog.com/I_am/blog_post/93456 A couple more tracks for the true Cuban jazz devotee: Afro Cuban All Stars (love these guys, and incredible project) '97 "A Toda Cuba le Gusta". The track is Amor Verdadero. Armando 'Chocolate' Armenteros from the Son Cubano NYC - Cuban Roots New York Spices 1972-82 compilation cd. • soulrocket says great songs. chocolate on c-7 really cooks. i believe this is the original song (you tagged it on your post too) & one of my moms fave tunes you guys need to find where the letter "Ñ" is on your keyboard. ano = ass in spanish, heh. aÑo= year. weird enough mog didnt take the "ñ" either... 20 aos.. poor "ñ", is almost a lost cause.

  • fistula spume says Great post. I love it when people band together and add a lot of other songs. Makes the time at work pass by much better. Really liked them all. Especially that Chocolate on C-7 track. Need to look up the Son Cubano NYC album.

  • Girlcrawl says soulrocket - Thanks so much for the fabulous Maria Teresa Vera addition - loved it! Agree that the Chocolate En C7 track smokes - "Chocolate" is an amazing Cuban trumpeter, but I've not been able to find his work anywhere (other than compilations). Sorry about the inability to type the 'n' correctly, and MOG did not cooperate either. debzeppelin - Hey there and welcome to MOG! So pleased that you dropped over and listened to some Cuban tunes; glad you enjoyed, and thanks for commenting. Will attempt to compile some 'latin heat' artists for you to check out - fellow mogger I am could probably be immensely helpful, and would be delighted to help; he's at http://mog.com/I_am/blog_post/93456 oceanrain - I don't listen to much just a few faves; glad you enjoyed :-) fistula spume - So glad to 'see' ya, and delighted we could help you whittle those work hours away. Love the additions (fellow moggers are so cool) and the C7 track too! Cheers. Shudd33 - So nice to have you back in the Mog-o-sphere! Glad you enjoyed, and how's the band experience? Cheers.

  • Girlcrawl says fistula spume - Must admit, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to make the MOG rounds and the daily inbox is near overwhelming. Am someone who typically leaves the laptop actively connected, so I tend to check favourite news sites and of course MOG posts frequently. May have to curtail the mogging activities shortly though or will permanently mogify my poor brain! Enjoy your visits, and drop over whenever you have the time :-)

Ditto - love visiting your site as it's endlessly interesting (always feel as if I've just walked into a fabulous party), and your music selection superb! You're a delight, and thanks again for posting the Maria Vera track - I've listened to it several times, and it's a charmer.
