Uptown Dirty Mind Friday Funk!

Posted over 2 years ago
Prince's Dirty Mind LP, released in 1980, whilst not a commercial success, received enormous attention due to the controversy around the sexually explicit lyrics and provocative subject matter. It was, however, a brilliant, ground-breaking musical exploration that combined unbridled sexuality with superb musicianship; an album which daringly fused a myriad of styles/genres (funk, hard rock, soul, wave), created a sultry new mold for 80's urban funk/soul, and firmly established Prince as a musical genius.

  6. Marigold says Girlcrawl, A little shot out to Minneapolis? On FF no less. I do not claim to be a super big Prince fan but I recognize a good musician when I hear one. I have never given him a fair shake. I should give Prince another spin. These songs were fun. Today when i was pulling vids for my FF post I had no idea that Earth Wind and Fire was so funking awesome! I have to get my hands on some more of that! Thanks take care and have a great weekend! M

  7. Lady Miss Ian says Hey Girl - I was just talking to my gentleman friend the other day about this song. He was telling me a story about a friend from the sticks wanting to go to Uptown as soon as he moved to Minneapolis because of this song. We were trying to imagine what kind of picture he had in his head of what Uptown would be like. Everybody dressed like Prince, dancing funky in the streets? Oh yeah, cuz it's just like that. :-)

  8. Marigold says Here is a picture I took in Uptown last weekend. This is the heart of Uptown on the corner of Hennipen and Lake Street. This picture was taken out of a night spot known as The Independent in the Calhoun Square building.

  9. Cody B says I went to college in Minnesota just as this LP came out. I was indoctrinated to the wonders of the purple guy early and often. Even then he was revered as a GOD in MPLS. I,on the other hand was reviled at my little college in Northfield,MN, because me and my buddy DJ-k were all about hip hop in '82. The kids just weren't ready for it yet!

  13. Girlcrawl says PopeyePete – isn’t it though; thanks mate! oceanrain – mine too – love his music, and cheers! moovyphreak – can feel all sorts of vibes in these tracks including some disco 70’s – cheers! Party Pose – Thanks for dropping over, and leaving a comment. Occasionally the girl just has to spend time crawlin’ about the gutter; granted I’ve already said a hail mary for posting these groovily ‘lewd’ vibes, and I’m not a religious soul – right, actually said two in case one became lost in translation! Cheers. Marigold and Rawkkiddo – yes, a not so subtle ‘shout out’ to all the Minnesota funkster peeps! And M – great ‘Uptown’ photo, thanks for posting it; glad you enjoyed the tunes, and the Dirty Mind LP (was his 3rd release) is a fab listen from start to end! E W & F is funk-awesome indeed, and love their early LPs. Lady Miss Ian – just what Uptown needed aye – another ‘stick-hick’ trolling for a freaky funkster sideshow :-) Thanks for dropping over, and appreciate the anecdote! Cody B – Ditto about the anecdote, and you mad unkle hipster – I suspect you’re still ahead of the kids :-) 2Serenity – Hope you have a grand experience in London (a quaint childhood ‘stomping’ ground of mine). Had not read the article, but will do so – thanks for the pointer, and as always so glad you dropped over. Iowa aye – didn’t see that detail coming :-) Flower – you’re a cool lil’ mog-doll – thanks! dermahrk – glad you have finally heard what all the chit-chat has been about; hard to believe it’s been 27 years since the album hit the streets because that means I was…well, a girl never reveals her years – suffice to say I was a mere pup! :-)

  14. Mike the Knife says This album is what busted him loose and runnin' wild for me. That Isley Brothers vibe, the insouciance, the musicianship, the smart 'n' sexy lyrics...Ooowee!
