WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Throwing Muses; Pylon; and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282

Posted over 2 years ago

If anyone suspects that this is a deliberate attempt to regain some of the 'indie cred' points I forfeited due to the recent Broadway musical post, my reply would go something like this: Bloody right!

Here are tracks from three of my favourite American 'indie' bands whose music and originality I still find thrilling. There are, of course, countless others, but for the next couple of days these are the vibes/artists that will be keeping me company. Have a smashing weekend fellow moggers!

  4. Girlcrawl says Dzendvokh - Shall do just that. :-) Am going to visit a few posts that I've been trying to drop in on before signing off awhile. Always appreciate your visits. Cheers! Dale - Quite glad you enjoyed, and that you dropped by. Have a fab weekend! :-)

  5. dachmo says I was listening just this afternoon to R.E.M.'s Oddfellows Local 151 and whenever I do I always think of TFUL282. I haven't intentionally listened to any REM in years nor have I heard any Thinking Fellers... in about the same amount of time. Odd coincidence, thanks for the Pylon too! Have a Happy!

  6. Augusts1 says GC you don't have to worry about losing any cred, you're cool & credible regardless what you do! Love your posts. Love Muses but not heard anything by Pylon or TFUL282 even though I've heard about them. Liking both tracks, thanks for sharing them. The TFUL282 song reminds me of Pavement(who I adore).

  7. dachmo says GC you've just been hit by 2 similar posts from Augusts and Myself coming from opposite sides of the country being written at the same time no less, that's also weird.

  8. Augusts1 says Very weird, lol. It's quite synchronicitous for sure D!
    Permalink posted 11/03/2007
  9. Girlcrawl says Wow, what just happened? That's definitely 'synchronicitous'! We three are like a little MOG Bermuda triangle I suppose. :-)

  10. Girlcrawl says dachmo – I’ve not listened to R.E.M. in years either. Logical connection to think of TFUL282 when listening to that particular album though. Remember that I was quite excited about TFUL282 as I was able to see them perform early, and really never lost interest. Same thing happened with Throwing Muses and Pylon – you just knew you were hearing and seeing true indie greatness, and few others had experienced them at that point so it was memorable. Thanks for the listen – love that Pylon track. Augusts1 – That’s kind of you to say; made me smile. I guess once a ‘hipster’ ever a hipster aye. MOG is just brimming ‘with cool & credible’ people including you and dachmo! Love what you guys post. Have long abandoned a certain lifestyle, but for countless years lived in and about the ‘alternative’ musical world as well as delving heavily into the whole rave culture (more business than pleasure) so I can still tap into what’s worth noting if necessary. Think I had a head’s up in the music department given my background and a somewhat already established eclectic taste, so it proved a natural mix. Appreciate the listen dear, and comments. Adore Pavement too!

  11. Augusts1 says Yes Mog is brimming w/cool & credible folk, that's for sure. And it wasn't kind of me to say cause it really is true!

  12. Neill says My Throwing Muses Story; When they toured the UK in 1988 I went to see them at Harlesden Mean Fiddler (NW London) which was a tiny (300 capacity?) music bar. Got there early to find that the place was absolutely rammed, got a few drinks in before the support band, who I had never heard off, came on stage and blew everyone away, including the poor Muses. Staggered out of the venue completely shell shocked and actually got up early the next morning to go down to Rough Trade Records to buy the only thing released by the support band at that time; Come On Pilgrim. . One of those ‘Shock of the New’ moments….

  13. Girlcrawl says Augusts1 - ;-) Tried twice to upload a Pavement song for you, but MOG suddenly will not cooperate...I'm giving up &%#@. Thank you! Neill - Love those sort of stories; am now recalling a few some of those same 'shock' moments. Came very close to posting some early Pixies as they are another fave, and I'm nearly certain that the first time I saw them perform was as the support band for the Muses as well. Know it was Come On Pilgrim material, and they were just beginning to create a buzz. What memories! Thanks for dropping over, and appreciate the entertaining anecdote. Cheers.

  14. Cody B says OK, let me add a few points to that "indie cred" score. I actually give you double for going from Broadway to (started in a )Bar bands. For real, tho, it's music and it is all good. When it comes to quality of any musical stripe you always deliver. No exception here. On another note, I'm still working on the new Betty LaVette..I dig it, but I still don't find it eclipsing the first (comeback) record..I guess that's my "shock of the new" moment. When I first heard _Hell_ it blew me away. Have a good 'un..

  15. Bartleby says I should probably not say it but your MOG is definitely an exquisite place to visit and loiter about, GirlC. My ears are always pricking up with eager anticipation because they know they'll be in for a treat. - Does this mean that others' MOGs are less aurally exciting? Certainly not but yours has a distinctive zest which is always delectable. Case in point, the three tunes posted for this indie week-end mini festival. I've never heard of Thinking Fellers who sound a bit like Luna - which is a plus-plus in my score. Same thing for Pylon: fresh and new to this simple mind. Throwing Muses is vaguely familiar, I think. So thank you ever so much for this introductory offer. (Yeah, I know my indie score is below zero)

  20. Marigold says Very nice post Girlcrawl. I never was into the Throwing Muses much but did follow Tonya Donnely to Belly and was into Belly for some time. I saw her in concert at least three times if I recall. I am not totally unfamiliar with TM but could stand to revisit it due to your post here. Thanks for bringing it as usual. As for Thinking Fellers.....well, I have heard of them, just never heard them. Thanks for the intro. Take care and have a great weekend.

  21. soulrocket says good one, cynthia. i loved the pylon song. i bought their "gyrate" album years ago but i never had the chance to listen to that 7". is "dub" any good the title sounds so promising. indie credibility restored. after this weekend mess of disco-dancehall posts i need to work on my credibility myself too, heh. have a great weekend you too. :-)

  22. Girlcrawl says Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments; am very pressed for time at the moment, and can't address individually, however, I read all, and moggers are such fabulous peeps!! Appreciate the 'double points' Cody B, and Bartleby you make me giddy. :-) Cheers to all soulrocket - Here is the Dub single, and I posted the Danger track as well (I really like it) - the tracks are from the Pylon !! EP (Db recs, Armageddon 1980).

  27. Mike the Knife says Always perked up at the sound of Pylon's "Dub." And gots to love Kristin & the Muses. Question your cred? How about praising your eclectic nature and your refusal to be pigeon-holed?

  30. Girlcrawl says I am - What a fantastic song! Time Toy 'freakin rocks' too; appreciate you posting the Hi track, and will definitely follow the link. If I recall correctly, the 'Athens, GA: Inside Out' compilation was an excellent listen. May have to dig that one out if I still have it. Thanks much!

  36. Girlcrawl says kat3260 - You are absolutely correct; appreciate the encouragement! :-) ongoingly - Almost chose something from the Hunkpapa disk. Throwing Muses honestly never released a 'bad' or poor album. Dizzy's a great track; thanks so much for posting - appreciate. Cheers!

  37. goodmusiconly says Great post, as usual--and sorry to be so delayed in getting here. My first thought is that it's a shame I haven't acquainted myself more with Throwing Muses, since my original exposure to them circa 1987 on the 4AD compilation _Lonely is an Eyesore_ (The song "Fish" is quite a style departure from the track you posted - which I am finding quite yummy). And I can honestly say I was wholly unfamiliar with TFUL282 until Fistula posted about them in September ... I still don't have any recordings from them but I can see that will have to change. Thanks!

  38. Girlcrawl says goodmusiconly - What a lovely comment, and hope you will forgive my delayed response. Would recommend virtually any TM album - their 1986 4AD debut titled Untitled (or simply Throwing Muses) was phenomenal if you can locate the original issue - the 2CD In A Doghouse release contains the re-issued debut, Chains Changed EP, and the band's earliest tape demo. Definitely look at the Hunkpapa, The Real Ramona, Red Heaven, and University albums. Think I have four TFUL282 releases; would recommend Strangers From The Universe, Lovelyville, and I Hope It Lands possibly in that order. Appreciate you dropping over! Cheers.
