Long overdue: Madonna @ Roseland Ballroom 4/30/08

Posted over 3 years ago
I spent April 27 searching for any way I could snag tickets to Madonna's exclusive, free concert at Roseland Ballroom on April 30. My friend is a HUGE fan and I didn't get to get her tickets to the last tour. That whole weekend I kept my ear close to the radio, so I would know when to call Z100 who was giving out tickets almost every hour. That was unsuccessful...Then I Googled how I could win tickets, using multiple phrase combinations - "win tickets Roseland hard candy," "madonna ticket giveaway roseland". I entered a contest at moderntonic.com and another website, I downloaded the remix of "4 Minutes" on my phone to enter my name through Verizon and I answered questions on Z100's Madonna trivia contest online. It's the day of the concert and nobody responded to me, so my friend and I thought that we weren't going. However, after my last class on April 30, I listened to my voicemail and Z100 told me that I won the online contest and I had to be at Roseland that night @ 8. I called Patricia who was in her dorm sitting on her futon, depressed about having to start a 20-page paper and she hopped on the next train from Po-town to Grand Central.I think we got to Roseland at 7 and there was mass chaos...sorta. The theater for "Jersey Boys" is next door to Roseland and the theater to "Hairspray" was across the street, so there were men in suits and women in dresses attending those shows and there was, well, everyone else going to see MADONNA. Since the Broadway shows were starting earlier, police officers were yelling at us to come back or to stay across the street, so we wouldn't block the theatergoers. The police eventually put barricades and we were let in in small groups. When we got in, the energy was AMAZING! There were jumbo-trons and the DJ stood on an elevated booth wearing what looked like Swarovski-encrusted headphones. He blasted mixes of rock songs, hip-hop songs, basically everything, and people in the crowd were dancing, laughing and having a good time. It was the first concert experience I had where the bass was strong enough to make all my clothes and my whole body feel like it was vibrating. There were some familiar faces in the audience. Patricia and I saw Fran Drescher from "The Nanny" and fashion duo, Traver Rains and Richie Rich, who are behind Heatherette. However, when the DJ started playing a medley of candy songs, we knew it was almost time for the main attraction. There she was...in the flesh. MADONNA! She started off singing "Candy Shop," which was pretty hot. The most memorable part, however, was when she performed "4 Minutes" and Justin Timberlake joined her. The crowd went hysterical! I don't remember the setlist in order, but she also sang, "Miles Away," "Hung Up," "Give It to Me," and "Music." My favorite was "Give It to Me," because during strobe lights danced above the audience and everybody jumped up and down as if they were at a rave. She's definitely a rock star who breaks the mold. Musicians usually break out the Coors, Heineken or whatever brewsky they please while they're onstage, but Madonna chugged wine, champagne or I dunno Cristol(sp?) from this big-ass bottle!Sadly, there was no encore. At almost 50, Madge definitely has her craft down. She can perform like no one else I've seen. This concert has definitely made me more of a fan. Anyone who knows how to get the crowd amped before performing sans opening acts and raise the energy a billion times more is a maverick in my book.Wow that was really long, but it's something that I don't ever want to forget!
