WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

B-sides

Posted over 3 years ago
While listening to BBC Radio 1 today one of the DJ' s (Edith Bowmen) while discussing the new Oasis Album/Collection 'Stop the Clocks' came out with the line that Acquiesce is the best b-side ever (having been B-side too 'Some Might Say' back in April 1995). Now this got me thinking that as someone who very very rarely buys singles (it's all about the album for me I'm afraid) was I missing out on a huge world of hidden music, that is the B-side, and if this is the case what are the great tracks that I have let pass me by. Therefor I thought I'd open it up and tap the font on knowledge that is MOG I see if I can get guidance in tracking down a few hidden gems that I've missed because they were on the flip-side to stuff I couldn't bring myself to buy.

  1. touchtheceiling says I love b-sides. it would probably be much better for you to look up the discographies of the bands you like and find those elusive tracks, rather than have me suggest some to you, however. I've been told my tastes are less than perfect. best of luck.

  2. holyfool says A lot of bands, if they're around long enough, usually get around to releasing a b-sides/rarities collection. Or collections, in the case of Smashing Pumpkins. Having said that, I am also a big fan of b-sides and will sometimes go out of my way to get a single mainly for the b-side, such as Pearl Jam's _Jeremy_ single. As good as that song is, I rarely listen to it just because it was too overplayed when it first cam out. However, in addition to the beautiful "Yellow Ledbetter" b-side, there's an absolutely stunning song called "Footsteps" that is one of my faveorite Pearl Jam song _ever_. And I also was lucky enough to come a cross an import box set of Nirvana's singles from _Nevermind_ and _In Utero_, with all the excellent b-sides for those singles ("Smells Like Teen Spirit" b/w "Even In His Youth"--tasty!)

  3. mister gary at work again says Wow, major bonus points to holy fool for mentioning one of my fave b-sides ever, Nirvana's "Even In His Youth" ... My favorite Oasis B-Side ever was "Talk Tonight," from the Wonderwall EP (though I'm pretty sure 'Talk Tonight' has actually seen release on an Oasis full-length at this point, because I'm sure they did the whole 'b-sides' thing already).

  4. Geoff78 says Talk Tonight made The Master Plan which was a B-side album from November 1998 the new release is a sort of best of double CD with a mixture of A and B sides.

  5. Robbie Howell says synchronicity on this topic. lately, i've been listening to a lot of b-sides. here's some of my picks: editors - blood, contains their cover of r.e.m.'s orange crush. editors - munich, a track called french disko. easily could've been a single. strokes - the end has no end, contains a live cover of the clash's clampdown. totally awesome. a must-have. blur - good song (the dvd single), a track called morricone that should've been on think tank. psb - paninaro '95, contains a live cover of blur's girls & boys. psb b-sides that stand out are too numerous to mention. i will happily email a list to any interested party. new order - world in motion (re-release), a track called such a good thing. chemical brothers - believe, a track called giant. very high cool factor on this track. i have a cold & have been moving in slow-motion this morning. this topic has excited my brain & i feel a little better. thanks, geoff. ps. another interesting topic, which i will leave for someone else, would be a discussion on gems hidden on compilations & soundtracks. a number of bands i now adore were introduced to me by way of compilations & soundtracks.

  6. holyfool says To chime in once again, the _Singles_ soundtrack has another of my favorite Pearl Jam songs, the non-album track "State of Love & Trust". Also, Soundgarden's "Birth Ritual" is awesome too, but I'm not sure if that's on _Fopp_ or _Ultramega OK_. Tori Amos' "Siren" from _Great Expectations_ is another stand out track for me.
