WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Requiem for Lush

Posted over 3 years ago
I've been listening to bands I haven't listened to in a while - moving out into the middle of nowhere will do that to you. I've also been listening to new stuff thanks to discovering Mog (ie, Anna Tsuchiya - thanks Rei), but today Lush is getting a lot of attention from my iPod. I was always irritated with them for never playing anything from Spooky live after the Spooky tour - that was THE dumbest - but I'm sooo glad I got to see them three times and got to meet Miki before Chris Acland killed himself. As far as I'm concerned Lush is the only band who ever got the Etheriel genre right, and certainly they were the ones who MADE the genre. Hard to sing in the shower, but so powerful emotionally. My favorite song is probably Nothing Natural but Undertow will always win as the most powerful song they ever did.Lush is a band that I think my school years would've been a lot different without for some reason... and I think they are the only band I had an official dance for. Which got developed in a Streetside Records when the album Split made the "Upcoming Releases" dry erase board.Definitely one of my more missed bands...

  2. rei says You might also want to check out Brooklyn's Asobi Seksu for more shoegazer-based dissonant guitars and femme vocals. The lyrics for their first album were in English [from what I've heard so far], but their second album, Citrus, has most of its songs in Japanese. I stumbled onto them thanks to CMJ Monthly.

  3. GeekXian says Thanks for the tip, Rei -- I've got Asobi Seksu on my 'want' list at LaLa. I'll tell you what I think if/when I get it! :)
