WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Fritz's Picks No. 1

Posted over 3 years ago
Hello and welcome to the first installment of Fritz's Picks! Seeing as I spend most of my time perusing through the musical underground I thought it might be worthwhile to give you periodical updates as to what cool stuff I've found. So not all of it is gonna be brand new stuff, I do like trawling through old music and finding interesting artists. This column aims to seperate the wheat from the chaff, the men from the boys and so on, so don't expect any mainstream pop/rock crap. I guess the easiest way to do this is to pick a few particular songs I've enjoyed recently. Anyway here goes...Dirt Road Molly- Sugar Hill into Growling Old ManI came across this by looking through Jullie Duggans site and found it simply amazing. This is a great 9 minute bluegrass instrumental with fast tempo and great feel. Its got fiddles, guitars, banjos and all the rest...You can download this and some other Jullie Duggan tracks over at www.banjofrailer.com Briztronix- Rapid CloudSlow, funky hip hop instrumental from this duo from Brisbane, Australia. This track has real fast layered beats but still manages to feel real mellow by keeping the piano and horn parts nice and slow. Briztronix (MC Shazam, DJ Bacon) have so far released an EP and an Album which you can dowload in their entirety (plus cover art!) at www.briztronix.com bonus points for the free downloadage!!Neuron- FaschistenstaatBlistering crust/grind from Germany. I think their new album is on Crimes Against Humanity Records.. As is expected from this genre we get some impossibly fast drums, crushing bass, and grinding guitar work. And why is it that all vocals sound better in german? (slight bias perhaps)Massive Attack- Teardrop (Mad Professor Mazaruni Vocal mix)The original is pretty iconic so I was sceptical of the quality of a remix. Then I saw that Mad Professor was responsible and decided to give this a chance. As per usual, the Professor delivers. The beat has been chopped up and some more echo and spring reverb has been added to make this thing dubtastic.Combat Wombat- Corruption Dub (Chasm 'Corruption Bounce' Remix feat. The Tongue)Combat Wombat are a bunch of pretty eccentric folks from downunder who do things like run a solar powered sound system, so their music is definetly worth a mention. This is my fave track of theirs remixed by the man Chasm himself. Great instrumental, quality lyrics and a melodica in the mix! I cant remeber the right link for this one but be sure to look at www.combatwombat.org and www.chasm-music.comSo there you have it. Thats it for now, stay tuned for the next installment and make sure to support the underground music community!cheers

  1. princesszyrtec says Thanks so much for the info on the Julie Duggan site! I just posted a request a few weeks ago looking for more of the true bluegrass/old timey country music that I know is out there. And to have some free downloads! Woot! I like your taste so far and I will be checking out your other recommendations. Or, as I like to so cornily put it - MOGommendations. Great job informing the MOGworld that there IS life beyond the Jessica/Brittney/Madonna/DMB/NSYNC axis of evil! (yes, I have Madonna on my digital collection) I'm only 1/5th evil.
