A Number One Song 35 years ago

Posted about 1 year ago

Vicki Lawrence's The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia reached number one in 1973, followed on the charts by Tony Orlando's Tie A Yellow Ribbon at number two. Vicki received a gold record on Dick Clark's American Bandstand on which Tony was also a guest that week. Georgia was written by Vicki's first husband Bobby Russell and originally submitted to Sonny Bono for Cher, but Sonny declined to recommend that Cher record it. In addition to Vicki's huge hit, the song is also associated with Reba McIntyre.
