A Few Words About Ambiance

Okay, so I've finally decided to weigh in on the new Goldfrapp album. First, I have to give her credit for doing something quite different this time out. Not only for the sake of crediting someone for trying to rework/reinvent their sound. It would have been incredibly easy for Goldfrapp to simply cash in on the trend towards something danceable these days. In fact, she probably could've killed and made 3 to 4 tracks that would be played at literally every party for the next 6 months. But she didn't, she tried something else, maybe because she was sick of what she'd done before, maybe to prove a point. But either way, this is a solid album. Despite the criticisms she's gotten for not doing enough on this album, I think those reviewers don't understand that she's trying to shift towards subtlety. Also, it's interesting to see her carve out an entirely new niche in the genre. Because this isn't anything that downtempo, trip-hop, or indie electronic artists/groups are doing right now. So overall, while I think it might not be groundbreaking, it's a good step in an interesting direction.
