WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

GoTan Project

Posted over 2 years ago
So I went to see GoTan Project on a whim at the Sydney Opera House last week, and thought I'd MOG it. For those that don't know them, they're a Franco-Argentine collective, comprising a string quartet, vocalist, Spanish guitarist, pianist and . . . wait for it . . . two DJs. Yeh, weren't expecting that, were you? The only trouble is, I was really disappointed.I should explain, I decided to go and see them while drunk at a friend's place, having heard a song called Mi Confesion, which is kind of Latino sounding track with a hip-hop rap lyric. Very cool. Anyway, on the back of loving that, I shelled out $80 for the ride with a bunch of my best buddies. On the night, it started well - great visuals, good playing, etc etc ... but by the end, I was left a little unfulfilled, unfortunately. It was hard to pinpoint why, though. The only dodgy bit of music was when the singer was way flat through a whole song, which isn't a good thing to do. Anyway, other than that, the musos were great - especially the pianist. Some of his rhythms screwed with my head.I think, ultimately, I didn't get much more from seeing them live than I think I would from hearing them on a CD at high volume. I remember thinking the same about The Chemical Brothers when I saw them, too, at a festival here in Sydney called Big Day Out a couple of years ago.So there you go. A bit of a succinct review, admittedly, but in all honesty, it was all a bit non-descript. Still, I have seen worse. I just don't know if I'd go see them again, which is always a hollow feeling.
