Work of Fiction

I don't know what anyone else thinks of Fiction Plane, but they're new to me. I heard of them when The Police got back on tour and Sting decided to give son Joe Sumner the biggest exposure of his thus far humdrum career by adding his band as a support alongside the somewhat more bizarre choice of Fergie. So, what do I think? Well, Fergie's got great legs, but having discovered that Fiction Plane is, in fact, an anagram of "Infant Police", I was hoping to be blown away just like I was in the late 1970s when the now ageing Police did the very same to me with tracks like Next To You, Roxanne and So Lonely.Joe's voice is obviously from the Sumner mould. It's very similar to Sting's - super high, super crisp and excellent in every way. But the music left me cold. I listened to two tracks from Left Side Of The Brain, the band's second album - Two Sisters and Death Machine - and to be honest, I couldn't spot the differene between them. Both had reggae/rock-style guitar rifs, and fairly bland melodies and, all up, didn't do a lot for me. Nothing leapt out.The problem for Joe is he's past 30, and how much more mature he can get musically is perhaps questionable. I hope he improves, because he's certainly got the genes and a great voice. Sadly for him, though, it seems the songwriting talent of his father got lost in conception.
