Track Themes: "Afro Disco Beat" by Tony Allen
In the Last King of Scotland, charasmatic young Scots actor James McAvoy plays the personal physician of mass-murdering Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. As if that wasn’t dangerous enough, McAvoy’s character incurs the wrath of Amin by playing doctor and nurses with the wrong woman. While he dances with the devil, the soundtrack pumps out the sexy as hell, Afro Disco Beat.Unlike its Western incarnation, African disco doesn’t need men in tight trousers warbling at the top of their voices to put you in the mood. This track itself leaves little to the imagination. A shimmying bassline is punctuated by a rythmic guitar pattern. The drums sway and trumpets rise. There’s also a horn. You’ll need a cigarette when it’s over, but it’ll only be a few seconds before you’re ready to go again. Who could blame McAvoy and his lover risking life and limb? The song’s creator is Tony Allen, a drumming pioneer who was recently plucked from obscurity (ie. not the West) to play in Damon Albarn’s super-group, The Good, The Bad, and The Queen. As with most things, Albarn is way ahead off the curve on sounds from the dark continent. The first manifestiations of his taste for African music came with his 2002 album, Mali Music. The soundtrack for the Last King Of Scotland is the latest slab of Afro-beats to hit the Western mainstream. Who knows where the next will come from? Afro Disco Beat, along with wild and funky Love Is You, are worth the price of admission alone. With my best dictator’s cap on, I command anybody with a taste for strutting, sensual grooves to pick up a copy of this LP whether or not you’ve seen this (enthralling) movie. It’s killer.
