WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Muso Video: Black and White Town by Doves

Posted over 2 years ago
My favorite ever music video. A graceful and thought-provoking film that re-imagines the council estate (or if you're American, the Projects) as a prison. Sadly, as implied by the heart-thumpingly emotive song, that's not such a great leap to make.Director Lynne Ramsay (Morvern Caller, Ratcatcher) captures the estate kids evocatively, presenting their condition in a light rarely contemplated by our vulturistic media -- namely, that of desperate young souls who yearn for freedom. For me, this film represents the perfect marriage of style and substance. If only more artists, in film and music, had the compassion to match their cool. Perhaps then the world of popular entertainment, and maybe even beyond, would be in a healthier state.Ultimately, though, I love Black and White Town because I grew up on an estate like the one depicted in the video, and as such, am naturally disposed towards art that features the lives of forgotten people in forgotten places. In fact, I'd love to see a full-length feature on this subject, shot in the same dreamlike manner, soundtracked (of course) by Doves. Are you listening, Lynne? Please tell me you're a mogger!. . ."This is a dangerous place, man...". . .PS. Has anybody else got a favorite video they'd love to see as a movie?

  1. Peggah says I loooove Doves. Tahiti 80's music video for Love from Outer Space would've been a really cute longer 'movie'.

  4. FluxCapacitor says Absolutely. Love when Andy gets out from behind the drum kit to sing Here It Comes. He always looks awkward standing our front for a moment, then just nails it.
