WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

My Albums of '07, reviewed by a normal person

!http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1433/875732726_af03e757a6.jpg?v=0!_Special guest reviewer and all-round normal person, The Girlfriend_The great thing about MOG is that we're all music freaks. However, to everybody else, we're probably just freaks. So, in the spirit of fairness and balance, I wanted a non-freak to review the music I've enjoyed most in '07. For this solemn duty I turned to The Girlfriend, a self-proclaimed normal person. As such, The Girlfriend loves music but is not an obsessive, "I like stuff that I can dance to and sing along with. But there's some things I can't do anything to. And you have a lot of that." My albums of '07 were chosen after hours of painful deliberation. Therefore it was with trembling fingers that I pushed play on songs from each cherished album for The Girlfriend to deliver her vodka-fuelled, off the cuff, and in most cases, quite damning verdict...Oh dear God, what did I let myself in for?1. _Person Pitch_ by Panda Bear"An orchestra without a conductor with the Beach Boys thrown on top of it."2. _From Here We Go To Sublime_ by The Field"Good for the gym. Although subliminally he's trying to get you to take E and go dancing."3. _Favourite Worst Nightmare_ by Arctic Monkeys"You know what I think of these. The best band of the century lyrically, and guitar-ily, drum-ily, and bass-ily...yes, bass-ily."4. _Copia_ by Eluvium"When does this fucking song start?"5. _Overpowered_ by Roisin Murphy"Good for an Irish woman."6. _Untrue_ by Burial"Death warmed up."7. _We Can Create_ by Maps"Fucking Oasis with a church organ over it."8. _†_ by Justice"They need locking up for this stuff, it's so powerful. I love it. Brilliant! They're geniuses!"9. _The Good, The Bad, and The Queen_ by The Good, The Bad, and The Queen"Oh, here's morbid hole Albarn. But you know what? He works hard for a living. He's a trier. God loves a trier."10. _Weekend In The City_ by Bloc Party"Reminds me of a teenager explaining himself after being caught doing something wrong....very melodramatic...and very fast, confusing. I can't understand what he's on about!"11. _In Rainbows_ by Radiohead"Is that Thom Yorke?... He's cheered up a bit, hasn't he?"12. _Hey Venus!_ by Super Furry Animals"Theme songs for comedy shows."13. _Graduation_ by Kanye West"Celebrity fake shit, completely removed from reality. Very dancey, but too many guests. He does a cameo on his own album." 14. _Kala_ by MIA"The kind of music you'd hear in an Egyptian nightclub."15. _Because Of These Times_ by Kings Of Leon"Updated version of Guns and Roses, with better-looking fellas."16. _Finding Forever_ by Common"Beautiful. Telling proper stories, I believe him. Probably the only rapper I believe. And he has a lovely singing voice. I wish I could take the music away so I could listen to him properly."17. _Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga_ by Spoon " Fantastic! [Gets up and dances]"18. _Alive 2007_ by Daft Punk"Out of this world. Puts you right in the middle of a festival. I want to get one of their robot helmets to wear on my bike. [Does a robot dance in the sofa]"19. _I Wish I Could Have Loved You More_ by Candie Payne"I feel like I'm in a 60s movie. But it could just be Austin Powers, with Liz Hurley lip-synching."20. _Blackout_ by Britney Spears"Hate it. Don't care if the production's supposed to be good. It's self-indulgent shite! But then, I'm just a normal person and youse are the feckin' experts..."

  7. FluxCapacitor says @ Contra - Thanks. But it's a sad indictment of whatever the hell I'm trying to do on Mog that _a mere girl_ can come along and be a million times funnier and more insightful than I'll ever be! Bah! @ Mike - I know, I know! I've busted my tiny smidgeon of street cred with Britney. My (very) guilty pleasure for 07! Film reviews? I'll put that suggestion to her just now... Reply: "There weren't any good ones this year." @ Keith - Cheers but please don't encourage her. @ Sam - Sure, laugh it up at my pain... @ Aero - The Argentinian verdict is in: They like it! Thanks for stopping by!

  15. Dale says To go along with what everyone else has said, methinks it's high time to make The Girlfriend into The Wife, she's golden! Although she equates Maps with Oasis, but since she did it with style, I'll forgive her.

  18. Bartleby says "Flux's albums of '07, reviewed by a normal person" reviewed by a freak i.e. me: F*cking brilliant and nuttily witty. I thank the Higher Authorities for the invention of "The Girlfriend." Best review of a list of albums of 2007 I've ever read. I don't think anything could top it. Quote: "[...] there's some things I can't do anything to. And you have a lot of that." C'mon, I'm sure that with a little imagination you can do lots to "death warmed up."

  29. Lizziegreeneyes says *_bass-ily_*... (that is the coolest word I've seen in 2007) !!! Honestly Colin, I always dug you, but you were on the upward turn of average (I kid), now though... seeing you have feckin brilliant taste in your selection of "The Girlfriend", your cool quota just went through the roof !!! I am with Anna, that invite should go to yer luv, (but you should tag along as well) !!! As *+ALWAYS+*, a grand post from a grand lad ;)

  33. FluxCapacitor says @ Lizzie - *AH, TANKS!* And another vote for "bass-ily" as word of the year? You guys are just plain weird. Photo was taken at the Lovebox rave this year, but I know the tent you're talking about... quite a line up, all right. @ Sunny D - Her hands full? With me or the booze?! ... She likes a drink or two, aye. A girl after your own heart I imagine! @ DB - Not to worry, robot dancing on the couch is not for everyone.

    Permalink posted 12/29/2007
  35. Augusts1 says Well, I for one am NOT convinced your gf is normal. She sounds pretty f'ed up to me which is just fine. (Btw, no one is considered 'normal' once you get to _know_ them fyi, heh) "When does this fucking song start?" feckin' brilliant! "Oh, here's morbid hole Albarn. But you know what? He works hard for a living. He's a trier. God loves a trier." Albarn is god, you don't mess w/god so she's lucky she didn't much, heh.
    Permalink posted 12/29/2007
  36. FluxCapacitor says @ Calis - Thanks...but what if I was to tell you The Girlfriend is a complete invention of mine, and in reality you looooove me? ... Scary, isn't it? ... But completely untrue, so love away! (We'll be doing more reviews in the New Year.) @ A1 - Cheers. Yes, the "normal" label is a gag, of course, the photo being the clue to the gf's normalness, or lack therof. But it's interesting how musos see themselves as "alternative" or "different" when sometimes it's the view of "the common man" (which the gf has in spades) that is the most accurate, or at least, the funniest. Love Albarn myself but you should definitely mess with the Gods - that's where all the great art comes from!

  43. goodmusiconly says Haha! Oh, I commiserate with you (erm, if it is commiseration you are in need of), this sounds like just the conversation that would be taking place at my house. I don't think there's any question that to everyone else we're freaks ... ah, but freaks in good company, aye? Your girl's a gem, sounds like she can keep up with you (and who can't love a double-fisted drinker! You're caught, girlfriend!). There are many on here I need to familiarize myself with more -- in particular I remember Wozniak (remember him?) loving The Good, the Bad, and the Queen ... I actually have it but haven't given it a fair shot yet; and Maps. But I've taken the initiative to get to know Super Furry Animals better (because of your post a while back). But c'mon, can't I win you over on The National? ;) Great post, Cheers, Colin.

  44. FluxCapacitor says Gawd bless you for taking the time to peruse my list of crash-bang-wallop albums. '06 was M Ward, Sufjan, TV on the Radio, this year was a noisy pop one. These things are cyclical with me. So, you certainly can/have won me over with The National - I've been listening to it this week. At the end of '08 I will likely have a list full of sensitive, mature, songwriterly music...for the girlfriend to rip to shreds.

  45. poebegone says I LOVE THIS ENTIRELY! everyone is right. anyone who can come up with -- "When does this fucking song start?" "He's a trier. God loves a trier." "He does a cameo on his own album." -- is a keeper. don't let her get away, you hear? is she taking groupies?
    Permalink posted 01/29/2008
  46. FluxCapacitor says Hey, thanks for taking the time to read it, Ilay. This is easily the most popular post by, uh, "me". (I know how Charlize Theron's Irish boyfriend whats-is-name feels.) The GF was bemused by the reaction to it, tho'. She said that Mog is supposed to be for music lovers, so why does everyone love a post where she's slagging music off? Ungrateful or wha'?! As for the groupies... I pick them out from the front row for her. (You're in!)
