Nina Gordon's delightfully deadpan folk version of NWA's rap classic Straight Outta Compton was one of the first songs I downloaded from the internet. _I was so young back then_.Whenever I've been in need of a good chuckle I listen to indie fairy Nina describe how she's "knocking niggaz out of the box daily" and then issue a deadly warning not to "make me act the motherfuckin fool", all in the sweetest, most lilting tones imaginable. Although this acoustic version of Ice Cube's opening salvo is not as incongruous as first seems. By all accounts the former Veruca Salt singer literally went "toe-to-toe" with band mate Louise Post several times over stolen boyfriends and suchlike. What's more, I don't think Ms Gordon is sneering down her nose at the song either. It's too lovingly rendered to be a pure exercise in mockery. Nope, the lady means it. In fact, with Ice Cube now a cuddly star of family movies, I know which one I'd rather avoid in a rumble. Rest assured, Nina, your boyfriends are safe with me.
