TAKE OFF YOUR SOCKS LEST THEY BE KNOCKED

Nina Gordon's delightfully deadpan folk version of NWA's rap classic Straight Outta Compton was one of the first songs I downloaded from the internet. _I was so young back then_.Whenever I've been in need of a good chuckle I listen to indie fairy Nina describe how she's "knocking niggaz out of the box daily" and then issue a deadly warning not to "make me act the motherfuckin fool", all in the sweetest, most lilting tones imaginable. Although this acoustic version of Ice Cube's opening salvo is not as incongruous as first seems. By all accounts the former Veruca Salt singer literally went "toe-to-toe" with band mate Louise Post several times over stolen boyfriends and suchlike. What's more, I don't think Ms Gordon is sneering down her nose at the song either. It's too lovingly rendered to be a pure exercise in mockery. Nope, the lady means it. In fact, with Ice Cube now a cuddly star of family movies, I know which one I'd rather avoid in a rumble. Rest assured, Nina, your boyfriends are safe with me.

  1. HelenMarie says I'm having a hard time reading your post while listening! I'm usually good at multi-tasking but I just can't do it! Okay it ended...reading again. It is an endearing cover. I thought the same thing about Dynamite Hack's cover of _Boy's in the Hood_ but once I saw the video, it seemed more of a mockery, fine line there. Very funny to hear her voice with those words though... Hehehe!

  2. Marigold says I was having the same problem as Sunny D. Multi tasking is not always my specialty. Especially that voice singing such crazy lyrics while trying to read.

  6. Dzendvokh says There's been a whole slew of these covers going around mog lately, I generally like them, I mean they make me laugh anyways, and that there is the point I believe, it may not be "mocking", but it certainly takes what these guys were saying, and saying seriously, and makes the words seem pretty silly, so I don't think this version is exactly honoring the original song either......... not that it needs to be honored...... I actually listened to NWA when they first came out, I have straight outta compton on vinyl..... I was 11 years old.

  7. FluxCapacitor says Your eleven year-old self had it goin' on, so! It _does_ need to be honoured, it's still a fantastically exciting record after all these years. To my mind, NWA are America's Sex Pistols!

I learn one thing every-day, today's lesson, Nina is from Compton, cold hard FACT.... Flux, you rock it right... Tyler Durden
