Pics of my simply fabulous Friday night!

I live such a glamorous life that I think I'm going to become a social diarist! See what you think of my first diary entry!"Up rolls a riot van and sparks excitement in the boys"!http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2332/1559840943_7a72869f90.jpg?v=0!"...but the [security] men look annoyed"!http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2143/1559821921_aca8308b60.jpg?v=0!"...perhaps these are ones they should avoid"!http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2308/1559821929_9bcedcab14.jpg?v=0!"...they get their address and their [flares] took"!http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2018/1559821897_b0e736d8fc.jpg?v=0!!http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2314/1559821903_f7aee73b10.jpg?v=0!"... and all the coppers kicked [them] in, and there's no way [they] could win"!http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1217/693523001_d7a7490232.jpg?v=0!!http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2417/1559840973_0028a65f5a.jpg?v=0!And, eh, I also saw a lovely swan.

  1. Lizziegreeneyes says holliganism... you crazy kids you ;) Here in Philly - we just flip cars in the parking lots & light them on fire... Great film (least from my pespective) Green Street Hooligans... very interesting and for me an AMAZING character study. Love the pics !!! Hope you weren't caught up in any of the brawlin Colin !!!

  2. dachmo says I've stolen your picture of the swan. I used to live with two guys from Carlyle N. England and every Saturday morning they would have a few of their english brethren over to watch a live match on TV. Bodingtons was the drink of choice and the day always ended in a fight somehow, but they always showed up the following Saturday and do it all over again. I don't think we Americans will ever understand.

  3. Lizziegreeneyes says *Colin:* You'll hurt me, but I hope we can still be mates.... I am a Rebels girl thanks to my friend from Cork... technically my family (Mum's side) are from Galway & Belfast... but I got the red & white flag for the car anytime I go see a larger show - can always find it after the music ends & the mad rush to leave starts !!!

  4. Anna says Good god, football games are like that here as well! Exactly the same! Major props for the pictorial accompanied by Riot Van. The swan pic is surreal.

  5. Bartleby says I'm reading this two hours after England's victory over France in the Rugby World Cup... Somehow rugby, indisputably a very violent sport, does not seem spark hooliganism. Football on the other hand... PS: Christ, you live an exciting live... (Sorry Ireland didn't make the quarter finals.)

  6. Marigold says thanks for the pics Colin. That seems like a pretty exciting time. :)

  7. FluxCapacitor says @ Lizzie -- A keen sense of injustice, but not a brawler, no. It wouldn't do for the official photographer to get caught up in that sort of thing! Re. Cork, I'm half Corkonian as my Dad's from there and it's where I spent my childhood summers. But...I travelled down last week to see Cork play Rovers...and they beat us! So, I'm sorry, but I'd have a different use for that flag of yours! @ Dachmo -- What the hell are you going to do with my swan?! Go ahead, you have my blessings. I saw the little beauty in the river beside the ground on the way out, wisely keeping its head down. And re the Carlyle hoolies: must have been fun Sat morns for you! @ Anna -- I've always loved that song, ta. And the one good thing about football's "ultras" is that their passion gets the whole place rocking. Oh, and the Rovers DJ is phenomenal. The Stone Roses and the Mondays are mandatory, he drops Interpol and loads of other indie stuff, too. Last night when we were 1-0 down, he played the Cure's Boys Don't Cry... @ Bartleby -- What do the say? "Rugby is a hooligan's game played by gentlemen, and football is gentleman's game played by hooligans." Still, they wouldn't let our school play rugby (wrong side of town) so I've never liked it. But I did watch one or two World Cup games, and I thought the respect for the referee was amazing...you can't say a word out of place to him. (I heard the Irish team got in trouble with the ref for swearing!) I'd love to see that brought into soccer. And I've never said these words before, but...good luck to England! @ Marigold -- It is great fun, a proper lads night out, and at the risk of ruining my newly acquired, and totally undeserved hard-man image, these things are actually very safe, and well policed. I'm a soccer nut and also like a little (okay, big) hit of tribalism, now and then...

  8. darmuzz says My entire knowledge of football is from Nick Hornby's book Fever Pitch. The movie of it was remade as an American baseball flick. Go figure.

  9. FluxCapacitor says Hey, I enjoyed that book! Haven't seen the Hollywood adaptation but in England they did make a football version with Colin Firth -- a rather silly romcom, unfortunately. If, for some insane reason, you ever feel the overriding urge to read more football-related fiction, then I'd recommend John King's Football Factory, a wonderfully written novel about working-class men following a football team just for the kicks (literally.)

  11. Girlcrawl says A glamorous life indeed - reminds me that I once had one of those; nowadays mine is as serene as the swan appears to be in the photo. Enjoyed the visuals and the track!

  12. FluxCapacitor says @ Tracing -- There was also some football (I think). @ GC -- Lucky you...but, really, a riot van is as close as I get to "glamour" these days!
