Which song kinda disturbs ya?

Top spot in my heebee-geebee list goes to Neko Case’s _Hold On, Hold On_. The pitch black heart of an artful, tuneful, and downright beautiful country rock album, Fox Confessor Brings The Flood. The song narrowly beat out the entire back catalogue of Antony Johnson, the possessor of a voice so heart-sinkingly mournful that I’ve yet to find the right time of day, or indeed, year to listen to him properly. Sadly he was just _too_ disturbing._Hold On, Hold On_ depicts a woman’s complete and utter rejection of all earthly love. The kind of unrepentant nihilism that’s often found somewhat incongruously in country music, a seemingly safe, salt of the earth genre if ever there was one. This makes the darkness all the more contagious. Johnny Cash sang joyfully on _Folsam Prison Blues_ of shooting a man just to watch him die. And we all sang along with him. Case passionately exclaims how “it’s the devil I love, and it’s as real as true love”. And we do likewise.Case’s devil ain’t Beelzebub. Nor is she comparing a former lover to the spawn of Satan. (Hey, we’ve all done it.) Case’s narrator is completely alienated, not only from her family but also from society. She seethes with anger at the demands put on her to find a man, any man, and then do everything possible to “hold on, hold on.” An anguish that has led her to drug addiction. _That’s_ the devil she loves.Case puts it a tad more poetically, of course. The first line expresses of an uncomfortable truth that we’ve perhaps all felt at one time or another. “The most tender place in my heart is for strangers/I know it’s unkind but my own blood is much too dangerous”. If there’s been a more beautiful lyric to convey the feeling of being an outsider to your own kin, I’ve never heard it.She then succinctly presents a flawed person who was once hopeful of finding true love. “Compared to some, I’ve been around, but I really tried so hard”. However it all turned bad, “in the end I was the mean girl, somebody’s in-between girl”. For this she blames the “echo chorus who lied to me, with their hold on, hold on, hold on.”Case drops a broad hint as to the identity of her devil, thusly, “I leave the party at 3am, alone thank God/With a valium from the bride, it’s the devil I love.” This is a person now infinitely happier with drugs rather than a lover…or indeed a wedding. And for those clinging to the ‘Neko loves the devil’ theory, a true child of Satan wouldn’t never “thank God”…Aside from the masterful lyrics, the sing is bona fida _tune_, with ice-cool guitar licks paving the way for Case’s strident and melodic vocals. The result is an incredibly intelligent and affecting song. One final note: Johnny’s lyrics for _Folsam Prison Blues_ were thankfully all made up. Case says _Hold On, Hold On_ is her most autobiographical song.Like I say. Disturbing.

  2. poebegone says Hold On, Hold On is one of my favorites in the album, the other being the title track itself, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. the words pierce, too: How can people not know what beauty this is? He shames me from my seat and on my guilty feet I follow him in retreat. What purpose in these deeds? Oh, fox confessor, please. Who married me to these orphaned blues? "It's not for you to know but for you to weep and wonder when the death of your civilization precedes you." I flooded my sleeves as I drove home again. thanks, Flux. (:

  3. LyricalRevolution says That Neko Case song was quite unsettling. I would say Sufjan Stevens' "John Wayne Gacy, Jr." is pretty creepy. So is the soundtrack to My Summer of Love. (It's mostly Blonde Redhead and Goldfrapp). The track "Elephant Woman" gives me chills.

  5. 1234chainsaw says What Poe said. Some El Perro Del Mar songs are pretty creepy too. She makes sounding bummed out into an art form (like on "Party"); I don't know how she does it.

  6. FluxCapacitor says Poe - Fox Confessor's another reference to the devil, isn't it?...Creepy but beautiful. Lyrical - Blonde Redhead and Goldfrapp...Sounds interesting... 1234 - God Knows(You Gotta Give To Get) was a recent fave, and I thought she was quite hard on herself in that...maybe that's the secret. Beat yourself up! Lyrical & Poe & 1234 - Totally agree, guys. John Wayne Gacy, Jr is actually banned from our car stereo! Love the song but hard to listen to.

  11. poebegone says Fox Confessor = devil, i am thinking yes. i remember reading articles where Neko Case attributes it to like Eastern European folklore, maybe the mythical devil in those tales. LOL on Butthole Surfers. i do vaguely remember one video that was disturbing. something with cops and dogs maybe. sheesh, 'twas a long time ago...

  12. FluxCapacitor says Yeah, East European folklore, all right. Just dug this out of my del.icio.us -- from "coke machineglow's terrifically in-depth review:":http://www.cokemachineglow.com/reviews/nekocase_fox2006.html "Fox Confessor's title is taken from Ukrainian mythology -- the fable of the (cunning, ruthless) fox and the (naive, defeated) wolf. Circumstances vary with each telling, but the message is practically the same: the fox, thirsting for the wolf's need for absolution, cons its way into assuming the role of the trusted confessor, then promptly uses that relationship to abandon/seduce/kill/eat/generally fuck over its unsuspecting prey. In one telling, the fox fools the wolf into believing it can control the ocean's tides. The trusting wolf, naive enough to believe the fox has the power to control nature, heads into the swelling ocean, only to wash up on shore a pathetic stiff/delicious meal moments later."

  13. poebegone says Flux, that so rocks. i have always wondered about that album title, you know, but it's one of those things you forget by the time you actually have a chance to probe deeper. (now i know!) oh, yeah, i have one contribution to disturbing songs: Teclo by PJ Harvey. maybe it's just me but i had tried more than once to include it in a mix CD and it just really breaks the energy (even in a disturbing songs compilation, i'd bet).
